Diamond Head
At the top of a volcano overlooking Waikiki with a great view Aloha mates. Just got back from a week in Hawaii and fark it was hard leaving. Such a nice place with beautiful weather and, unlike all the other tropical places i've been, clean as well. I went with a german dude Daniel that i met in san diego who was on exchange and had a few classes together with him. He was an odd choice for a travelling buddy but would of had trouble finding anyone else willing to go during semester. He turned out to have quite a different mentality to me and it was sometimes hard draggin him out for a drink at night but we still got on alright. We had a decent hotel on the beach and pretty close to all the tourist shops and night spots.
First day there we spent pretty much all day in waikiki where its really built up with heaps of hotels but a really nice beach and the water was really warm. Rented some surfboards went surfing for the first time which was really easy coz the waves there are small but no problem to catch and you can ride them for ages. Managed to stand up and have about a
100 metre ride on my second wave. Second day went to pearl harbour and checked out the memorial over one of the ships that was sunk during the attack. Interesting historical stuff and definitely worth the visit. Third day we climbed a small volcano at the end of Waikiki beach which looks over the whole area. Only took an hour to get to the top but the view up there was spectacular. Had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe- another obligatory tourist stop. That night went on a booze cruise on a 45 foot catamaran with 50 random people. They were mostly oldies but all the beer you can drink on a boat at sunset looking at Hawaiin beaches certainly rates pretty highly in my books. Soon after the cruise, my german mate decided that he'd had enough and went to sleep (this was a friday night i should add). I was getting pissed off at idea of going out to a bar or club alone or not at all for a Hawaiin friday night but luckily was able to get in touch with some of Brian's brother's mates who were in the navy and stationed down there. Met them
View from the room
This was the view from our hotel balcony looking at a park, the army museum and the tail end of waikiki beach at one of the local watering holes and they turned out to be good blokes which solved the problem of havin a soft german travel companion. The clubs were good down there and was basically 50-50 split of locals and tourists.
Next day the navy blokes picked us up in a really nice mercedes (don't ask me how someone in the navy affords such a car) and went for a drive pretty much around the whole island. Went to famous Waimea Bay on the North Shore but the surf was flat as a pancake. Guess its the winter months that bring in the big swells. Headed out again that night, this time to a country bar/club to mix things up a bit. Was a strange experience watching all the boot-scooting and heel-slapping mixed in with the occasional yee-haww but still fun. Took it easy sunday with our time spread between the beach, pool, pool bar, and pool table. Monday went into Honolulu which is the only big city in Hawaii- around 800,000 i think so reasonably large. Did a lot of walking around taking happy snaps with the rest of the american and japanese tourists. The history behind Hawaii is
fairly interesting, discovered by Cook, ruled by Hawaiin royalty, wars between the different island's tribes and eventually being taken over by the yanks where its been an important military asset for years. After that, one of the Navy guys had a birthday which he was having at a strip club. Was funny taking Daniel to his first strip club- especially since he's been living in the netherlands for a few years and never gone. Spent a while there before hopping to a few more clubs and crashing out a couple hours before we had to get up for a snorkling trip on a boat we'd booked a few days earlier. Was so hungover snorkling but the water helped to shake out the cobb-webbs. That was the last day so checked out of the hotel and wandered around shopping, drinking beers and mai-tais and seeing the sights til the redeye flight home at night. Had a laugh walking around the army museum and making fun of daniel because his country lost the war and caused all that mischief in the 30's and 40's. He took it quite well.
Guess that's it for this entry. I've got about 30 hours now to
Big bronze surfer dude
This is some famous surfer from years back unpack, make it to some classes, do a couple of assignments, repack, and head off to vegas tomorrow with my cousin. Its a fun couple of weeks but missing a lot of class and hopefully not getting to far behind. We'll see i guess. Look after yourselves and feel free to email or whatever, its always good hearing from everyone, seeing what you're up to and getting the latest goss 😉

Wearing a fosters shirt darcy? i think thats worse taste than having a german pose with a swastika or bouncers in overalls.
