Maui, hawaii (Road to Hana) 06th Nov 2007
Prob Bestest day so far
Set off bright and early. Nice sunny day. Called off at some small hippy town for some supplies and had like 15mins to walk about. Nice place but not much here really ready to move on.
Next stop was a place where we could buy some banana bread. bread was gorgeous and the views and scenery were too. (see pics)
Next stop was a small tiny village on road side where we could buy some crafts fruit, lunch (tachos) or go for a coffee & muffin etc etc. I had a fish tacho (Gorgeous but not as good as chucks and more it was more expensive). I miss my tacho's!!!!
The next part of the trip was going to be very windy with lots of bends. Was already feeling a bit travel sick so i sat in the front with Gary (tour guide...funny guy) This was Garys first experience of the Canadian girls and Becki took a shine to him and was constantly hitting on to him and winding him up...all in good nature though. Made for a very funny trip.
Arrived
at the black beach. Though firstly we went to the caves where we all jumped in and then went swimming through the caves in virtually total darkness in very deep cold water. There were times when you couldnt see the person in front of you and they were literally inches away from you and sometimes everyone would be trying to grap hold of the side of the cave so they didnt need to tread water but every one got in each others way in and out of the water. Pretty scary stuff! At 1 point we had to swim underwater and rocks in darkness and hold out our arm and hope Simon grabbed it and pulled us through into the other chamber. When you arrived in the other chamber and your head popped up i couldnt see a thing and all you feel is you banging in to everyone else who is treading water. pretty scary. At the end of the cave we have like a 30ft or so to climb out of the cave (again in relative darkness). Once out of the cave we have to walk down to where we started in bare foot. Rocks were fairly sharp
and there were red ants everywhere crawling over you.
From there walked down to Black beach with Inga - it looked stunning but very bizarre with black sand. Chilled out for a bit and went for a paddle / swim. Quite a few rocks in the water so have to be careful.
We then went to Kipahulu, to do a 5km hike through a rain forest and bamboo forest to a 400ft waterfall. Grace (1 of the ladies on the tour) fell way behind and we a bit unfairly left her to struggle....but she made it to the waterfall eventually (after a little fall too). The hike was really fun and really enjoyed it. Ill never forget when we turned the corner and saw the waterfall for the first time....beautiful. I just ran for it and needed to get under it and in the water straight away. Felt so so good being under the fall (awesome, will never forget).
We then had to walk back and make our way to the red beach. We got there just before sunset. Again it was a really impressive place and seeing a red beach was very strange but amazing. Again

wainapanapa caves. Canadian crazy Becki trying to drown me i think. ater very cold and very deep went for a swim and paddle. Some of the guys swam right out and was jumping in off some rocks. But i looked at the size of the waves and the roughness of the sea and i thought id give that one a miss.
Thats it, road to hana was complete and we made our way back. Summary. Totally stunning, jaw dropping, Wow! During your journey down you see some of the most beautiful views and scenery im sure in the world. Ive never seen better and maybe never will. I could easily have taken a picture round every corner of road. The waterfall was my highlight of the day - makes you feel so alive when you see something like that and you stand under it. 1 disappointment - lost my rayban sunglasses (not a happy bunny). But even that cant spoil this perfect day
Got back that night and Chuck and his friend came over tho the hostel so i had a very heavy night on the lash with them. I remeber trying to navigate to bed at some ridiculous hour trying to walk straight and stop myself falling in the bushes. if i had fallen,

Looking down onto the black beach i probably would have stayed there. Made it to bed some how!
