We arrived in Fort Pierce, FL 21 hours after leaving Mangrove Cay. We timed it so that we continued from Mangrove Cay across the bank and into the Gulf Stream in daylight. We left Mangrove Cay at 1pm, and we were off the bank at 6pm.
Shortly after dark, we were approached by a stealth Coast Guard Cutter. Once they were on our stern quarter, they turned on their running lights and called us on the VHF radio. They wanted to know our intentions: what was our destination, where did we depart from, how many people were on board...etc. I spoke to them while Tony was on the helm. It was all routine stuff, and after asking us to standby for a few minutes while they obviously looked us up and checked us out, they told us to have a good and safe trip.
It actually felt good to know that we were back in 'sailing civilization'. The Coast Guard are our greatest lifeline should there ever be an emergency.
