March 17 Day 10 Duck Key to Marathon 17 miles
After a rainy morning catching up with chores on the boat we headed down the coast to Marathon which will be the furthest South we travel by boat. We didn’t have much wind so we motored most of the way. Along the way we saw our first porpoise. We watched about 5 of them swimming around the boat. We stopped and just watched them for about 20 minutes. When we entered the harbor at Marathon at about 5:00 PM we knew we had reached sailors paradise. There must be over 300 boats moored and anchored in Boot Key Harbor. 90% of them are sail boats We know that one of those boats is Periwinkle belonging to Canadian friends that we made during our cruise last fall. We will look them up tomorrow
March 18, Day 11 Marathon 1 mile
During our breakfast this morning we listened
Sailors Paradise
Marathon in the morning to the Boot Harbor Cruiser Net on Channel 68 on the marine radio. This is where boat people in the harbor can ask questions, give advice to each other and announce any social events planned. They have a buy, sell, giveaway time. They even exchange trevia questions. We were able to contact our friends, John and Gill on Periwinkle
on the radio after the cruisers net. We made arrangements to go over and visit them. They will be leaving Marathon on Saturday to start their journey back to the North Channel in Canada. John and Gill started their cruise last August. They have been at Marathon for the past 5 weeks. During our visit we met Barnacle Bill. Barnacle Bill is a 68 year old fellow that offers a service of diving under your boat and cleaning off the barnacles. Since Perriwinkle had been in the sea water for so long lots of little creatures had taken up residence on her bottom.
When we anchored near Perriwinkle we were surprised to see that the boat next to us haled from the Port of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.,less than 20 miles from where Rick lives We will connect up with them tomorrow.
March 19, Day 12 Marathon 1 mile pushing a grocery cart to and from Publix grocery store.
We had coffee this morning with John and Linda Karl aboard She and I. They are from Wisconsin Rapids and spend 4 months a year on their boat in these waters. They keep their boat on the hard in Florida during the summer and return to Wisconsin. We invited them to come sailing with us at Barnum Bay. We also met people on boats at Marathon from Plover and Lake Geneva, WI. It’s a small-small world. We got a slip at the City Marina so that we can re-provision, do our laundry and go site-seeing. We decided that our dinghy (rubber raft) would by too challenging for Rick to row from our anchorage to the Marina and back with the extra weight of Wayne, provisions, ice and beer. Ice and beer make up most of the weight? We also plan to leave early tomorrow morning on a bus ride to Key West. It costs a whole $1.50 for senior citizens to ride the bus. We better get this blog published before going to Key West. So in case you
She and I
Can you read where this boat hales from? never hear from us again you know where to start looking.
