Pensacola is the first of the Florida Beaches on the Gulf Coast side. It is known for its sugar-white sand beaches and emerald-green waters. Mike had never been to Pensacola Beach and I grew up in Mobile, only an hour away from Pensacola. We decided to explore the beach on Christmas Eve since we were visiting my parents in Mobile for the holidays. Pensacola Beach is so calming and serene in the winter time. The beach is peaceful because it's not packed with sunbathers and one can simply enjoy the sounds of the Gulf of Mexico.... read more

63* here at Gulf Island National Seaport campground. Sun feels wonderful- strong winds though. Felt great to get our bare feet in the sand and Kona (of course) played forever in the ocean. Not much of a campground more like an open field, out at the tip of an island. Here for two nights. Blue Angels are due to practice tomorrow morning across the bay at the Naval Air Station (We'll be thinking of you Logan!!) Finally able to load some pictures....... read more

High Above The White Sandy Beaches I flew down to Pensacola, Florida for my cousin Ian's wedding. Ian picked me up from the airport and took me to the rented high-rise condos overlooking the white sandy beaches of the Florida panhandle. I had feared that the beautiful coral sand would be stained with black, sticky oil from the BP spill, but no blemish was to be on the wedding or the beach. Ian is the youngest son of my mother's youngest sister Kathy, so Ian is over a decade younger than I. He is also my godchild, but I had lived away most of his formative years in California, England, Taiwan and Colorado. When he was a teenager, his family moved down to Pensacola, so by the time I moved back to Kansas City, he ... read more

9-25-10 Woke up to a major thunder experience, but didn’t result in much rain at all...only a couple of small showers. Then off to Pensacola. I followed in the car, as it was only about 30 miles. When we arrived at the local Walmart, we decided it was too much in the middle of town...which was much larger than I had anticipated...anyway, we ventured on to Gulf Breeze. Parked at the Walmart there and took the short drive out to Pensacola Beach. Fabulous!!! You could certainly tell that there were both a naval air station and an air force base (Pensacola Naval and Eglin AFB)!! Lots of short hair on the beach this afternoon!! I was surprised that the beach was so much more crowded than Gulf Shores which we just left, but we figured at least ... read more

The Ride from Top Sail throutgh Pensacola to the Dolphin Island Ferry took us past places we had been to before and held a few nice surprises; namely that an area that had been so devasted by Katrina that a 12 mile stretch of road along the beaches had finally re-opened, and the seemingly underpromoted but well developed resort communities along Alabama's Gulf Coast! I keep forgetting to mention SHOPPING; mostly because we don’t shop much when on vaca. However, just about every brand in the USA has an outlet between Route 30A and Destin. There is definietly something for mama to do while papa is playing golf or fishing and the kiddies are at a waterslide park or playing mini golf. We didn’t stop in Destin this time; previous blogs have information on the waterside ... read more
