We said a temporary goodbye to Key West this afternoon as we treked north to pick up "the mammas" (a.k.a. Linda and Elizabeth) at Orlando International Airport. They were to depart Providence at 7:50pm and arrive Orlando at 10:50pm. We could hardly wait. As a matter of fact we had continplated having them FedEx'd to us, but my mom would be upset at the cost, so we opted for budget friendly Southwest Airlines! :-) When we awoke in Key West it was another PERFECT DAY. One of the most uplifting feelings (to me) is opening a window (in this case a screen door to a private balcony) to see a brilliant sunny day, feel a cool breeze, and hear the rustling of tree palms blowing in the wind. I sat at the desk, did some work, ... read more

Where else can you see a bunch of drag queens racing down the street (in high heels no less) pushing people in beds? Where else can you find a bunch of locals and tourists from around the world aged INFANT to WAY TOO OLD TO BE IN THE SUN THIS LONG...cheer such a parade? Where can you walk by a pirate museum, key lime pie factory, seaplane tour booth, tattoo parlor, theatre, tropical grille, honkey tonk, gay dance club, insurance company, real estate company, and beach bar -- all on the SAME street? Where can you hear LIVE music from 10am-4am 365 days a year? See a dog bark out a tune to an Abba song being played on a flute? Have a kind (albeit drunk) man wrap his arms around you, give you a kiss ... read more

Hello from sunny, warm, beautiful, friendly Key West! Yes, I like it here quite a bit! :-) I can't believe April and I are actually here -- and that I am typing yet another blog. To say the journey back down to Key West was, um...INTERESTING would be an understatement. I always go into these things thinking (and hoping) I can write a nice, short, to-the-point blog -- but then I think of ALL THE STUFF that has happened and I am compelled to share it with you...lol! So get comfy....or drunk...your choice. I guess I should start from the last time I wrote. I was in the land of glitz, trump and taffy -- Atlantic City. I was there without my camera, with a cold and an overall feeling of unease. Luckily we decided to ... read more

A small islet, Sunset Key, appears outside our balcony window this sunny morning. Populated with new looking homes and fringed by small sandy beaches that reach down to green water, it looks like one good wave could wash it all away. To the right is a small key covered with a grove of trees that have no leaves. Is it damage from a previous storm? In the distance, other keys appear like small round dots on the ocean. The ship offers many excursion options for discovering Key West, from snorkeling to sport fishing to historic walking tours. Since Alan and I are on bodyguard duty, we accompany Kathryn to Compass Rose for a leisurely breakfast and day. Once we’ve completed our meal, Kathryn decides to go back to her cabin for a morning nap. Alan and ... read more

WARNING! THE FOLLOWING IMAGES MAY CAUSE INTENSE LAUGHTER, SEVERE LONGING AND SENSORY OVERLOAD! Today was an amazing day. April and I woke up bright and early get some work done and then headed out for breakfast at the charming and easy to fall in love with - Blue Heaven on Thomas Street. This restaurant, loved by Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney to name a few, is a whimsical Key West classic. The decor is shanky shack with an artistic twist. Most people dine in the outside courtyard where there is a very cool wooden bar with a huge Indiana Jones type fan and canopy. The big draw, beside the delicious food and friendly wait staff, are the roosters, chickens, baby chicks and cats! It feels like you are entering THEIR home. You are THEIR guests and ... read more

It's February 25, snowing up north, and here I am enjoying summer! Yes, that's right - SUMMER! Ok, technically it's not "summer" -- but it sure feels like it. As I sit typing this blog the temperature sits at a comfortable 74 degrees. It is 11:30pm. Where are April & I? We are on an island, yet still in the US. We are closer to Cuba than Miami, 90 miles to be exact. We are on an island known as the Conch Republic. An island popular with parrotheads (April and I included). An island known for its fantastic diversity, excellent fishing, emerald/turquoise water, flowing palm trees, funky beach bars, fish shacks and Gay Pride. An island that once was home to Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and my personal favorite - Jimmy Buffet. An island known for ... read more

One anniversary I took my wife to a vacation rental spot in Key West called Keys Luxury Resort. They have two properties that you can select from depending on what your taste is. We chose the Coral Hammock Vacation Homes since we weren’t much of boaters and wouldn’t get much use out of the docks at Oceanside Condos and Marina. The Coral is set up like a little community with condo rentals located throughout. We had a great time on our Key West, Florida vacation as there are many things to do in Key West Florida. We went snorkeling, diving, ate at some decent url=http://www.happycow.net/north_america/usa/florida/key_... read more

Key West Bed and Breakfast The Heron House is a Key West bed & breakfast we stayed at 2 years ago when we went to the Keys for a friends wedding. It was really nice with beautiful gardens that occupied every corner of the property. This was a luxury bed & breakfast if I ever saw one. With only 23 rooms you get a real sense of seclusion and privacy. As for eating, you would think a city like Key West would have a lot of health food options. They had a couple that I clustered when surfing the net. The Café was really good. Not completely vegetarian, but the vegan menu was large and scrumptious. ... read more

It is hard to say goodbye. We leave tomorrow. It has been such a relaxing time here. Today we parasailed. We were the only ones on the boat so it was really nice not having to wait on others. We were dipped in the ocean once. What a view. Sunset was spent at Fort Zachary Taylor SP. It has to be THE best place to see the sunset in Key West. There were only 4 other people on the beach. It is not the chaotic, crowded, cruise ship ridden place that Mallory Square has become..oh how I miss the "old" Key West of the 70's. Yesterday we went to the Aquarium and handled some sea creatures. I don't think the Aquarium has changed at all since the 70's. Good thing it is only $10 to get ... read more
