Washington, DC -In the midst of Pope-mania Arriving in Washington, DC we didn't know whether we were lucky or not. Pope Francis was arriving the following day to meet the president -roads were going to be closed, access to some of the sights were going to be limited. The whole event was kind of a big deal. We knew nothing about his DC visit until we were on the Megabus there. We are not Roman Catholic, so hearing of his visit we were more or less indifferent to it. We were coming to Washington to sightsee, get a glimpse of Barack and shamefully visit sights featured in the popular US TV show 'Scandal'. Washington, DC is definitely a capital built with the intention of being a capital. The wide roads are in grid format; vertical avenues ... read more

Welp. Here we are again. I'm back in the blogging seat and I am ready to provide an update. Many of you may recall my post from May 1, 2014 stating that I was ready to serve. I had been nominated to Peace Corps service, and had been placed for service in Indonesia. Ultimately, I ended up deferring that nomination in order to better stabilize my personal and professional situations in preparation for such a commitment. Well, at the end of July of this year, I returned to the States in exactly just such a position. Currently, I am a Master's candidate at American University where I'm studying International Training & Education (heretofore to be referred to as "ITEP"). Part of my specific degree program includes a massive field research component. Of the 27 in my ... read more

We landed in Charlotte, North Carolina, a bit dazed after a long old night flight from Hawaii. During the flight I made friends with a lovely lady from Tennessee who confessed that she had a “real strong Southern accent”… She was awesome. Once we picked up the car, we made the four hour trip to the Great Smoky Mountains. Approaching the National Park, we noticed that there were a large number of large men sporting dungarees, handlebar moustaches and enormous beards, and that the people were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Now, Tom left you on a “cliffhanger” about the tent so here goes… we’d had many thoughts on how to fix it, some more ridiculous than others, none seeming very likely to work. We eventually found temporary success by cutting the elastic, removing the broken section ... read more

After goodbye breaky with Blake and Suzy, left Toronto around 10.00a.m. and headed to Niagara on the Lake, a beautiful little town, probably one of the prettiest we have seen, had a walk around the streets walking along tree lined street with baskets, beds and pots of the most gorgeous colourful flowers everywhere, had lunch in a cute little restaurant.... this area has lots and lots of wineries around it.. so bought a couple of bottles of wine too! Another 25 minutes up the road to Niagara Falls, still as majestic as when we saw them back in 1992, the Canadian side has the best views...seeing we had already done the Maid of the Mist boat ride gave that a miss and walked along the footpaths to get the best view of the falls. We were ... read more

Our day "off" Thursday was quite welcome. Julianne and two of her roommates stopped over for some pool time, but the water was super cold so I didn't get in. She was heading back to Minnesota the next day, so that was our last visit with her while we were here. Friday we decided to be a little ambitious, knowing things would likely get pretty hectic on the Fourth. We started off at the Smithsonian Institution Building (The Castle); not much to it, but it was a super cool building. From there, we headed over to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. That place had some very neat exhibits - there are two floors, an Imax theater and a planetarium! We saw tons of planes, several space suits, space exploration vehicles and satellites, huge missiles, ... read more

Let me start by saying that 4:00am starts to the day are not my thing. We ended up at the airport with plenty of time to spare, and went through security in what seemed like ten seconds (best experience ever). Julianne met us at the Ronald Reagan airport and helped us navigate to the Metro and into the city, but we had about 4 hours to kill before we could check into our Ho-Partment (we rented an apartment/hotel which they call an Apartel, but we decided we like HoPartment better), so we decided to get lunch and see the White House. Sweet Green was on our list of vegan friendly restaurants in the city, and this salad place was excellent (mine even had wild rice in it!). Usually when I'm on vacation, I don't like to ... read more

This is a somewhat belated post as we had a busy time travelling in May when my Mum and Dad visited and we haven’t really caught up yet. In classic Ian style, Dad decided to book flights to come and visit before we’d completely settled in which result in them flying in the day before I had to fly out to Washington DC for an admin week at the Embassy. So we decided to view this as an opportunity rather than a problem and turned it into a holiday. I headed off to the embassy for a few days to have Fiona, the boys and Mum and Dad join me mid week for some sight seeing. The few days up at the embassy were a little tedious, but it was great to catch up with a ... read more

See, the thing is (… an often heard sentence opening around here) – we got on a bus around 1pm up near the northern end of the Highline (watch this space over the next couple of years as it evolves into the rather upmarket sounding “Hudson Yards”) and five hours later rolled into Union Station in DC to rendezvous with some Australian friends who have recently relocated to there. After an initial catch up and a settle in it’s off up to 14thStreet NW, an area riding a significant wave of gentrification as witnessed by a diversity of ethnic eateries and trendy shops (eg Batch 13 – a store specialising in small batch distillery products) but still with enough edginess around to keep it in balance. The next morning, after a slowish start, we ... read more

With dawn breaking on our first full day it was up and at 'em for the Trotters. We had tickets booked for the trolley bus tour and jumped into a taxi to take us to its starting point. 15 minutes of slow moving traffic with a sermon on the radio about the evils in this world can feel like a lifetime when you're still slightly jet lagged. I have to say that Bill handled the drivers direct questions about his love of Jesus Christ and the certainty of going to Hell without it with skill and tact. Personally,I was more than relieved to escape with a leaflet about life after death after a merciful break in the traffic. The trolley bus was excellent. Basically a hop on hop of service that takes you around all the ... read more

And so we awoke to our final day in Washington. True to form we were up bright and early. Rather than jump back on the trolley we opted for walking to our first destination - the National Archives. What we failed to appreciate was that this city doesn't really get going until 10 A.M. Getting there at just after 9 was a little previous to say the least! A swift change of plan aided by a trip to Starbucks and a shot of espresso sent us back to the trolley where we took the other route on offer which travels further out of the city to the National Cathedral. This has been a source of pilgrimage for Bill since he first saw Mrs Landinghams funeral. Having endured 30 minutes on the trolley with a party of ... read more
