After spending some time doing more planning on our itinerary, we left the lodge at 10:15 and 68 degrees. It was chilly here last night…probably the only place in the US that is below 90 degrees, from what we hear. Today, we decided to make another trip through Rocky Mountain National Park. By this time, we pretty much know the roads, have been there at least 5 times and crossing it twice in a day on some visits. With this park so high up in elevation, you never know what you’re gonna get, as Forrest Gump would say, when you visit. Last time we were there, the clouds were down to the ground and we could barely see the road in front of us, let alone any of the spectacular views that it is so famous ... read more

Beamer is feeling a lot better today. He is not fully recovered, however he has a lot more pep in his step. As a matter of fact, at the end of this day, when we arrived at Bob and Gloria’s ski lodge, he immediately started jumping up and down and running around like a little kid. He remembers this place and he likes it here. Perhaps he can detect the scent of his little friend Pierre. He is now laying in front of the fire relaxing and watching the flames. He still won’t eat his dog food, but that’s not because he is sick, it is because he got spoiled by the people food we fed him during his recovery. Did I say he was spoiled? We hit the road this morning at 7:45 and 77 ... read more

Geo: 39.8917, -105.762Ah, the air here in Colorado, like in Maine and many of the northern states, is fresh and invigorating. It's great to sleep with the window open, something we never do in Florida. So it was a lazy morning. No need to jump out of bed and get on the road early. Beamer started the day sleeping on the sofa. That would be his usual routine after guarding us all night as we sleep. He may be small, be he takes his self-appointed position in the family very seriously. In fact, right now as I write this, he is lying in front of the sliders because he saw someone out there earlier and he has placed himself between me and someone he views as a threat. Gotta love that dog.We left at 9:30 AM ... read more

Geo: 39.8917, -105.762We headed out this morning at 7:30 AM and 57 degrees with Colorado in our sights. We drove for three hours through southern Wyoming, and as we got further south, the topography got much more interesting than it was yesterday. As we have seen in the southwest, out of deserts rise great mesas, and we saw some today. They did not have the bright and variegated colors of the ones in the southwest…these were yellowish tan…but they look majestic nonetheless with the horizontal ridges at the top and sand falling away at the bottom. We left Wyoming and crossed the border into Colorado at 10:23 and it always feels good to be in this state…it is incredibly beautiful. Colorado gave to me a love for mountains and perhaps one day I will see the ... read more

It started two years ago with my parents telling us about the retirement trip they had planed, one which would take them all round the world in 4 months, starting with a road trip across America from Denver to San Francisco, on to Hawaii for two weeks, then New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania, then finishing the trip in Thailand. Then came the invitation, would Paula and myself like to come along? And who could pass up an off like that?! So here we are, starting the trip of a life time. Yesterday we flew out to Denver, Colorado to start an epic journey, one that is going to take us all over the world. Colorado is stunning. We have spent two days up in the mountains in a town called Winter Park and we have couldn't ... read more

We departed Moab with a sense of a relief. The Utah dessert and the suffocating heat engulfing the Southwest were in our rear view mirror. The red dessert turned green and soon we were at the western foothills of the Rocky Mountains. As we arrived in Grand Junction, usually crystal clear skies were filled with a thick, dark smoke from the westernmost of three forest fires in the state. The Rockies grew nearer and at last, after driving through a smokey haze, we were amongst the grand mountains. Rolling down our car windows, we had emerged in cooler temperatures and brisker air, a refreshing gift from the Alpine gods for which we were so grateful. Colorado, like most of the other areas in the western United States we had been through, was under extremely dry conditions, ... read more

The most embarrasing thing is that the young folk out here (that's almost EVERYBODY besides me) keep commenting on my "Retro Jacket". They're, like, "Hey man, cool retro-jacket. Where'djya git it?" The problem is, that I bought the thing BRAND NEW in 1989! You mean it's not still in style?... read more

Finally got through Kansas, and caught the first glimpse of the Rockies. At first, you think you're seeing the mountains, but as majestic as they seem, they are only the foothills. After a few miles, the expansive vista opens up before your eyes. As many times as I've been out here, this never ceases to amaze me. This mountain range is one of the most spectacular sights on the face of the earth. It's not exactly the Himalaya, but then again, it's only a 4 hour flight, or a 24 hour drive away from Toronto. If you haven't been out here, do yourself a favour, and plan a trip. Anyway.....it's good to get out of the prairies and into the mountains. Skiing starts tomorrow. Staying in Boulder, CO for a night, then heading to Winter Park. ... read more

On Friday night, the 18th, I flew into Denver where I met up with Montserrat. Montse had never been skiing before, but was willing to go. One of the few who were willing to, even with a free condo thrown in, what is wrong with people? Montse is a friend from Mexico, who now lives in San Francisco. She is adventurous and a ton of fun, and made a great addition to the trip. We waited for, what seemed like hours, for my board to come around and met Steve outside of the airport. After we loaded up we made the 45 minute or so drive to Steve and Erin’s place. (Steve and Erin are friends from Omaha. Steve used to work with me and I met Erin through Steve. They both attended Creighton and got ... read more
