The next morning we were up and headed out. We were driving
along and remembered on a previous trip when we had watched a herd of
elk cross the road in front of us. This time there was no elk to be
seen but there were two cranes with young in a field that we were able
to observe. Nice.

We had not gone much further when spied
something on the right side of the road next to the mountainside.
Thought it was some kind of bird and turned around to check it out. It
turned out to be a mother merganser with 11 babies! We had pulled over
and watched her safely cross the road with all the babies and march
along the side of the road until she could get under the fence and down
to the water. What a real treat!

Arrived in Jackson Hole in the
early afternoon and stopped and did some shopping and then headed out to
the park. Pulled into the Gros Ventre campground and found a nice
campsite with a view of the Tetons out the kitchen window. Can't get
much better than that! Walked around after dinner and visited with some
of the other campers. We had heard there had been a major windstorm in
the Tetons and one set of campers we had talked to actually experienced
some of the devastating winds near their campsite. Saw some nice birds
but never close enough to get good pictures. Called it an evening and
headed to bed
