Hi from Beautiful San Diego, It's 9:00 pm and we need to be on the bus at 5:15 am so this is going to be a quick note. It was another great day with the Marines. We spent the morning at the Marine Corp Air Station at Mirarmar to see first hand Marines at work after basic training. Most amazing was the opportunity to visit the flight line and see the fighter jets and helicopters up close. The jets were taking off for exercises not far from where we were standing. Again it was amazing to hear about all of the educational opportunites afforded to these young people and their extended families. The Marine program pushes its members to get as much education as possible. This afternoon we visited the Marine Corp museum at the training ... read more

Attention! Step Down :) You will be glad to hear that I survived Day two and am quickly becoming a huge fan of the US. Marines. The only part I don't like is the yelling. It wouldn't be quite as bad if I could understand what they are yelling - but it sounds like a foreign language to me. The drill sargeants bark out marching instructions and I just try to at least keep on the right foot. By the time I get home I should be an expert marcher. THis morning Brigadier General Angela Salina, one of three female generals in the Marines, talked to us about how the goal of the Marines is to take young men and women and make them into good citizens. I was especially impressed with the Core Value Based ... read more

Hello from Beautiful San Diego, This week I will be attending a workshop for high school educators at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. There are teachers, counselors and administrators from Las Vegas, So. Calif., Hawaii and Guam in attendance. All of the Marines we have met thus far have been incredibly nice, very fit people. (My room mate noted you could cut bread with their hip bones) I will be trying to give you some info on the Marines as I learn about the program myself. So far I have arrived at my Squad Bay (Living quarters at Half Moon Inn on the Bay), and got squared away (unpacked my bags) and enjoyed the talents from the galley (kitchen). Tomorrow we meet at 7 am to take a bus to the training depot. ... read more

It was our last full day in San Diego before heading north to LA to catch the plane to NZ. We decide to go to Balboa Park - we'd seen it in guidebooks and heard about it but weren't sure exactly what it was, however it was right next to the zoo so at least we knew where to go. We manage to find a space in the increasingly busy carpark and follow a few people who seem to know where they are going. We walk dowm the side of a building and out into a pedestrianised street, lined with mock old decoratve buildings and fountains and gardens. Quite a surprise! The mock old buildings are all museums too, housing different collections. There were little cafes and gardens - formal, botanical and japenese and the place had ... read more

Monday 11th Aug (pictures to follow) I woke up early and started planning the days activities while Gra had a lye in. I set up surfing at Mission Beach followed by a Kayak and snorkel tour in La Jolla. So we hired our surf boards and attempted to look like we knew what we were doing. After Gra had a few attempts to get on the board he invented his own style of mooning knee surfing!!! very talented I thought, We both struggled to get on the boards with any grace at all and were exhausted after an hour. Gra realised his shorts were way too loose to master the sport of surfing in one hour, so we planned to try it again another day. It was on to La Jolla next, but when we got ... read more
