Neat Entrance to a Bridge
One of the many bridges we had to go over today on Highway 101. I would like to start today's blog with a big congratulations to my cousin Teresa. She gave birth to her first child, a happy, healthy, 7 lbs. 2 oz. baby boy and she named him Caiden ! Welcome to the world Caiden and best of luck Teresa, I know you'll be a great mother !
The early morning brought a cold foggy air into the Waldport KOA. Not only was the morning cold but it was also very quiet and peaceful. The only thing you could hear during the short walk to the showers was the waves crashing onto the shoreline. I stopped for a minute and just stood there (in my red flannel gown) and listened as I took a couple of deep breaths and savored the moment. The air here is so crisp and clean, it's very refreshing and what a way to start out the day. Like I said, it was a really cold morning so we hurried on to the showers and then began packing up for the trip down Highway 101. This is what some call the most beautiful scenic drive in America. It would take us to our next destination which was the Redwood
I DON'T LIKE BRIDGES !!!
Okay, they got bigger the further we got down the coast. National Forest just across the Oregon state line into California. The Oregon Coast did indeed offer some of the most beautiful and calming sights that I've ever seen. Due to the roads, Tim could only drive about 40 miles per hour so that allowed us the opportunity to really enjoy the scenery. Once the fog started lifting we could really see and it was just amazing. Just outside of Waldport we come upon a small espresso shop and the three musketeers decided they needed some fuel to help get them jump-started. A dash of this and a shot of that and cream on top and all that stuff !! I swear it looks more like some kind of dessert rather than coffee. A little ways into the trip Tim announces that we are almost to the sea lion caves so his crew starts preparing. We arrive at the caves only to find out that you have one of those cute little tour guides and you get to ride an elevator all the way to the bottom of the cave !! Yes, we had two little disappointed cavers but they decided to continue on anyway and check out the sea lions.
When they returned to the motor home the consensus was that it was pretty cool but definitely not as cool as the Ape Cave. We traveled on through the Siuslaw National Forest which led us to a small town where we decided to stop for lunch. I spotted a Mexican restaurant and thought, Mmmmmmmm, cheese dip and chips would be great right now. Tim whipped it in the parking lot and in we go. Tim, Kayla and Emily all ordered water to drink and in honor of my Mother, I ordered a Margarita on the rocks with a salted rim !! Although it was only around 12:30 in the afternoon, I thought what the heck, why not live on the edge a little ! The waiter came over to take our order and I immediately asked for a large bowl of cheese dip and some chips with salsa. He looked at me and said " Mam we don't have cheese dip on our menu." I started laughing (out loud) and said "Yea right, what kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't serve cheese dip." I thought he was just messing with me because he could tell we were from out of town
or something. Well, it turns out he wasn't messing with me, he was dead serious. First we can't get sweet tea anywhere, then we couldn't get grits anywhere and now no cheese dip !! That just isn't right !! At least the margarita was good !! Tim said it must have been good because it knocked me out for about the next hour and a half. It seems that I missed a small stretch of Highway 101 but Tim said I got to see the best parts. We continued on until we eventually crossed over into California and arrived at the KOA. As soon as we pulled in I could tell it was nice. The lady working at the counter was super sweet and everything was so clean and well kept. We are staying right on the edge of the outgrowths of the Redwood Forest. It's still kinda cool outside but it is really beautiful here and I'm happy to report that I bought a new pink fuzzy jacket and I am no longer forced to wear the dreaded orange sweatshirt ! The girls threw on their tennis shoes and headed out on one of their adventures while Tim and
I set up everything for the night. You will be happy to know that I am off of "pushing any buttons in the motor home" restriction. The bump on Tim's head has healed and he's taught me very well how to push all the buttons and when and everything. I'm telling you this thing has so many buttons and contraptions and stuff you wouldn't believe ! I swear you have to have a college degree just to operate it ! Thank goodness it comes with a huge owner's manual. Once we're all set up, Tim and I turn on the TV and sit back and relax but it wasn't long before the girls were back and they had worked up an appetite. I had remembered that the lady at the front desk said that Pizza Hut delivered here to the campground and I thought that would be really cool. So that's what we did, we ordered pizza and salads and waited for Pizza Hut to deliver. As we were waiting for the delivery guy I thought to myself, we came all the way across the country to California and we're ordering delivery from Pizza Hut ! Oh well, when the
family's hungry you gotta do whatcha gotta do !! After dinner we all went outside and built a fire and played Phase 10 by the light of the fire and Tim's lantern. Sometime around midnight we decided it was just too cold outside and we brought the game inside and played until 1:30 in the morning. It's really great spending so much quality time with the girls plus Tim and I are always up for a good game of cards. It turns out we're not so good because Emily won the first game and Kayla kicked our butts in the second. We demanded a rematch and real soon ! We're all going to try to get up in the morning and have a hot breakfast here at the campground and then head out to drive through the Redwood Forest and then off to San Fransisco. I am really really nervous about crossing over the Golden Gate Bridge so please say a special prayer for me tonight. Take care and I'll talk to ya soon !! Candy
