Redwood Forest
This was in the Avenue of the Giants ! Crescent City KOA provided us with a nice, quiet and enjoyable place to stay. Our morning started off just like all the rest. Showers, clean-up, pack-up and hit the road. Tim got behind the wheel of our Coachman Aurora and pulled out onto Highway 101 and started towards the Redwood National Forest. In route to see the Big Redwoods, Kayla and Emily decided they wanted some hot oatmeal with toast for breakfast. We just missed the all-you-can eat pancakes, at the KOA, by about 20 minutes. They were not having much success cooking while we were riding so we pulled over for a few minutes and let them prepare their breakfast safely. The entire motor home smelled like blueberry oatmeal and warm toast. It reminded my of when I was a little girl, in the wintertime, sitting by the fireplace, and my Mom would make us oatmeal and buttered toast before we would have to catch the bus for school. Of course Momma’s oatmeal didn’t come in pre-packaged, pre-measured, just add water pouches, it was the real stuff, loaded with real butter, milk and sugar !! While the girls were eating, I ran into the Redwood National Forest Visitor’s Center to
The Immortal Tree !
This tree has been struck by lightening several times and still survived ! fetch a few brochures and maps so that we wouldn’t miss a thing ! Our first stop was the Mystery of Trees walking tour, which included a two mile hike through the Redwoods as well as a Sky Trail ride to the top and back. Yes, I said ride to the top, and it was in a sky bucket !! I must say I handled it like a pro. Tim held my hand tightly and he and the girls talked me through it all the way to the top. Once we arrived at the top, we got out of our bucket and walked along the observation deck for a little while. I had just enough time to catch my breath and gather my thoughts before it was time for the ride back down. I closed my eyes, held my breath and clinched Tim’s hand and before I knew it we were at the bottom and it was OVER !! There were some really neat trees in this forest and we all enjoyed the fresh air and exercise. Next, we headed over to the Elk’s Meadow so we could watch the elk in action. Of course this was to be the
Never Too Old to Have Fun !
Goofing around in an hollow tree stump ! highlight of the day for Tim since he had already seen the Redwood Forest before. Unfortunately, according to Tim, it must have been naptime or something because there wasn’t an elk in sight. He was kinda disappointed, but then on the way out of the meadow, out of nowhere, appeared a momma elk. She came right up to the RV and crossed the street in front of us. This just made Tim’s day and I was so happy for him !! Several hours had passed and everyone was getting a little hungry. We stopped at a small hometown restaurant call The Village Pantry Family Restaurant. It was actually really good so we got our tummies full and were off again. We decided to take the scenic bypass and go through the “Avenue of the Giants”. This is another portion of the Redwood Forest that had many of the large trees and some unique ones too. We stopped at a couple of the trees and took some pictures and then we were off towards San Francisco. We hadn’t really decided if we were going to try and make it all the way, we were just going to see how tired we
were and how far we could get. Well, that didn’t work out so well for us. We found ourselves at the Golden Gate Bridge at midnight with nowhere to stay for the night. Tim did NOT want to go over the bridge at night, he insisted that we all see it during the day so we had to find somewhere to sleep. Between me, him and Magellan we ended up on a two hour wild goose chase through, three hotels, an RV/trailer park, a state park and a Home Depot parking lot. Two of the hotels were completely booked for the night and the other wanted $250.00 for a single room. The RV park ended up being a trailer park that looked like something straight out of a Jeff Foxworthy video. The hour long trip to the state park was a bust because it would only accommodate motor homes up to 18 feet or less and we’re 36 feet. The Home Depot parking lot was secluded and didn’t have any lighting. Finally, around 2:30 in the morning, we ended up in a Circuit City parking lot in San Rafael, California. The girls slept through it all but Tim was quick
Toot ! Toot !
We passed a bunch of firetrucks trying to get to the forest fires ! to turn to me and say “Honey, this is what memories are made of !!”. He’s so funny !! We are off to San Francisco in the morning to rent a car and explore the city. Good night, Candy.

Dawn
I called Ginny's cell and left your cell # so she can tell Dawn to call you. I didn't get to talk to Ginny so I don't know where they are today. She will probably call me when she gets home. Maybe Dawn will be there before you leave San Fran. Have fun and be safe. Love you! Mamma
