Have you heard of orange wine for Halloween? White wines are generally pressed off of their skins shortly after entering the winery— not the case with an orange wine. An orange/amber color is produced when white grape varieties ferment with their skins. In addition to an orange-ish color, the extended exposure to skins gives this style of white wine more tannin and a slight note of bitterness. Orange wines can be fermented in a variety of different vessels including stainless steel tanks or oak barrels. Often, a traditional method in clay amphora and qvevri... read more

Since I am always in Carneros to visit Domaine Carneros, there are other stops, some of which might be quite good: Saintsbury: Learn more about what single-vineyard means here. Founders Richard Ward and David Graves named their winery after the famous English scholar and wine lover. The wines here can be lush and rich. Bouchaine: With its first vines planted in the 1800s, Bouchaine claims to be the oldest continually operating winery in Carneros. I’m glad I just finished the house laundry today so there was a fresh, clean supply of towels to mop up our bedroom floor….although I have to say, it was not my quickest reaction time. Backroads has an annual Staff Ride as a show of appreciation which was this past week, and brought a ... read more
