(Adding more photos tonight!!!) So after walking down the entrance to the baggage collection at LAX, I walked through the doors and was thrilled to see the guys standing there. I was so pumped to see Molly, Kezza and Craig, gave them huge hugs and also met their roommate, Lisa. Sensational, I was actually shaking! Craig and Molly are the couple who got engaged recently and I was and am thrilled for them, to see two very good friends together like that ... well its pretty cool! From LAX we headed back to the flat they are all sharing in the Valley (Valley Village to be precise, which is near North Hollywood). As it was late we just crashed all the while catching up on what has been happening and I was just finding it a ... read more

The 101 is now a freeway that has taken some of the landscape around it. Once the vast Earl Warren show grounds that stretched from 101 (the original) hundreds of yards back, has been reduced in size. The stables now stand 20 or so feet from the freeway and some of the shops and homes are now a past memory. You are on the freeway that has been carved along the eastern hills and you overlook the old highway and the ocean. You can see the original highway, which now serves as an RV parking lot as well as the main means of accessing the ocean. Where the oil pumps still operate the road returns back down to the original height. Here was some of the most interesting and white knuckle driving around. This original road ... read more

After almost completing a long list of projects, my pregnant sister in law became very dizzy. Whether it was the rapidly rising southern California heat or the paint fumes, no one knew but after several hours at the local hospital the doctor prescribed home and lots of rest. My brother having gone back to school was in his last week of finals for the summer session which left me babysitter of choice. I was not very qualified, but I was free and already in the house so much to the frustration of my former boss, I delayed working on my required performance evaluation and entered the world of my 3 and a half (as she would have me note) niece. It had been a very long time since I had visited this world but with my ... read more

This past month has been quite busy for me. I have been working 4-5 shifts per week at St Joseph's and at Tarzana hospital, while also arranging my trip, and getting everything set up before I leave. With just a week left (I am writing this from work and it is Sunday night at 1:15 am and I am leaving next week Sunday am at 2:00 from LAX) I hope everything will fall into place once I reach Guatemala. I am mostly worried about my first day in Guatemala. My plan will arrive at 8:30 am in Guatemala City, and from there I will take a taxi to a bus station. Then I will take a 5 hr bus ride to Quezaltenango (Xela), and from there another taxi to my school. What a day! I just ... read more

I am leaving for my journey in less than 2 weeks (Saturday, May 13th). Today I went to Bank of America and took out $1800 worth in Traveler Checks. I plan on using traveler checks, cash and credit card for my stay in Central America. Last week I completed my contract at Tarzana hospital; I had two going away parties, which was very nice. Two of patients gave me hugs, kisses, and kind words. I am still working at St Joseph's, with 6 more shifts left. I have the next couple of days off, so I have been running around tying up loose ends. I plan on calling the Lizama family tonight, to arrange an evening with them. For those who do not know, I met the Lizama family back in March. Mr Lizama was my ... read more

I bought my plane tickets yesterday- I am leaving May 15th and returning August 2nd. I am traveling through TACA Airlines and I will have a layover in San Salvador in El Salvador before arriving in Guatemala. I had to change my dates around, but it worked out for the better. Alfonso will be meeting up with me July 9th, and then we will be traveling together until August 2nd. He will be in Mexico for a week visiting his mom before flying down to see me. So, officially I am leaving Monday, May 15th. My spanish instruction will be for 8 weeks (until July 8th) and then Alfonso and I will travel together through Guatemala/Nicaragua until August 2nd. We will be flying out of Managua and going back to Los Angeles. ... read more

I made my decision to travel to Guatemala back in February 2006. I have always wanted to live in another country and learn another language, but I lacked courage and strenth to follow this dream. I felt that I did not have the strength to leave my support system of friends and family, and I would feel disabled from homesickness. Previously, I had traveled to Nicaragua (Central America region) twice. The first time when I was 20 and the second time when I was 25. On both occasions, it was with a college professor and a group of students. We primarily stayed in the Atlantic region, in the city of Puerto Cabezas. During our time in Nicaragua, we ran health clinics and studied the socio-political history of the region. Each visit was three weeks in length, ... read more
