It was forty degrees outside when we woke up around 8am but we were COZY in our tent and sleeping bags! I'm a light sleeper, so even though I backpacked up a hill mountain, drank wine AND took an antihistamine, sleep still wasn't the greatest. Also I had ear plugs. I forgot how hard the ground can be. Backpacking is always a great reminder on how blessed I am to have a badass bed at home. I honestly believe it's a good thing to rough it once in awhile. =) I can't wait for summer- we're planning to do our first overnight backpacking trip with baby for Mother's Day, camp for the first time at Lassen National Park, backpack Yosemite's High Sierras (if we can get permits) and backpack and summit Mt. Whitney (if we can ... read more

Who says you can't go on an awesome adventure 20min from your home? =D I've been hiking Mission Peak for years, and it's become very popular in recent years. Everyone wants that iconic picture with the pole on the Peak. I think more people climb on it than use it for its intended purpose- to peer through the eye holes at various landmarks. Anyway, we're going to New Zealand next week to backpack the Routeburn Track. The first day of which will be a 1500ft elevation ascent over 5.5miles. Mission Peak is a 5.5mile roundtrip hike with a 2000ft elevation change. So I used this trail the past couple months on a nearly weekly basis as practice for New Zealand. I figure if I can do that, Routeburn will be cake. Sometime in January when I ... read more

Geo: 36.2703, -121.806 The first day we spent a couple hours driving south to Big Sur. It's a big area and all the state park campgrounds were booked. So, I ended up paying a little more for Ventana Campground, and I wasn't disappointed. It ended up being one of the nicest campgrounds I've ever been in. It's very well maintained, and highly recommend it. ;) We set up camp (Yasmin and Paul decided they were going glamping), cooked dinner, and hung out around the campfire roasting marshmallows for s'mores, eating cookies and drinking wine. Just talking. =) Then we played a board game in the tent until we crashed for bed.... read more

Fremont, 12-11-2002. We drive up to Big Basin Redwoods State Park. It goes up and up with fir and cedar trees lining the road. Down below I can see Fremont whch from up here look quite a bit bigger as I at first suspected. Pete is going on again about his big passion for the brunettes of this world even though there is not a single brunette in sight, nothing but trees, birds and more trees. I guess if it was up to Pete all these trees might as well be brunettes, that way he would be in paradise. Just before we reach the park we see a small red colored cat crossing the road. Too big to be a stray house cat and not big enough to be a cougar, backtracking we see this elusive ... read more

Fremont, 10-11-2002. Saying goodbey to Charly and Louisa last night I felt a bit emotional. These two have been taking real good care of me during my stay in Monterey. My faith in the human species has been repaired a bit. Leaving Monterey behind I cycle the rocky and spectacular coastline. It's only 35 km. to Fremond, my goal, and that is a nice distance for trying out my new bike Charly and Louisa have given me. A new gal under my *ss who has spent the beter part of her one year excistence gathering dust in Carly's shed. She has to be ridden in and gently at first, as any virgin lady should. I pass several small settlements that seem to be inhabited by mexicans only. Taco joints and small mexican owned minisupers that I ... read more

This Saturday we made a spontaneous plan of going for hike. It was supposed to be cold and windy but sunny weekend. Initially we were thinking of going for a hike in Muir Woods; however, considering the weather conditions we zeroed down to Mission Peak Preserve near Fremont. Even though this was a spontaneous plan, Pranav, Mohnish, Ruchi, and Saket also joined us. We started around 1 pm. It’s a 5.6 miles roundtrip hike. However, it is quite steep, especially in the beginning and at the end. Weather channel stated it would be a windy day. When we started the hike, we thought how windy it could be! Oh yeah… it can be really windy! In fact, it was stormy at the peak! Few of us had hiked in a recent past. Hence, all of ... read more
