Good Morning! We are winding down and getting ready to leave California this week. It has been wonderful exploring different areas around San Diego. We really liked Temecula but found Fallbrook, just outside of Escondido, to be charming and scenic. Today we will explore the mountain communities around us and then take a ride to visit the babies in Carmel Valley. We will be off to Las Vegas on Wednesday. Glad to see that Buffalo is sunny today too! Not long till Spring! Love, Joyce and Marc... read more

Well, I certainly can't say we rushed out of the house this morning. We were both due for a good long sleep, which we got. After taking longer than necessary to wake up and get functioning, we left to go a couple blocks away to Snooze, a brunchy place that had great reviews. It was apparently super popular, since at 10:something on a Wednesday morning it had a 45 minute wait. We went to a nearby juice place to get something to hold us over, and walked around the neighborhood until our table was ready. When we finally got seated, it was time for a good old American breakfast: an egg-cheese-ham breakfast sandwich for Serena, and some fancy Eggs Benedict sandwich for me. We then made our way back to the house and got ready to ... read more

Good Bye Avila Beach, Hello Escondido, Today, we left Avila Beach for our 6 hour drive to Escondido, location of the Lawrence Welk Resort. We really enjoyed out time in the Central California Coast area. The proximity of Morro Bay, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Pismo Beach make this a nice location for access to culture and wine country. We highly recommend this area as a destination. What can I say, driving through any part of LA, even on a Saturday, is anything but plesaureable. Heavy traffic with crazy motorcyclists weaving in and out is nuts. It's nice that Costco is well established as my usual gas stop is the Costco in Oxnard. Escondido also has a Costco as does Palm Desert. Gas is $3.759 at Costco. Trader Joe's are plentiful. We provisioned up at ... read more

MULE HILL Stephen Watts Kearny was one of the premier antebellum military officers in the Army. He was born in Newark, NJ in 1794. When the War of 1812 broke out he dropped out of school at Columbia University and joined up with the New York Militia as an 18 year old first lieutenant. Once his military career was established he married Mary Radford, who the stepdaughter of William Clark. Kearny was a man of capable organizational ability and established the frontier cavalry among other things, but as subsequent events would demonstrate he was a much more adept blowhard that he ever was a fighting man. When war with Mexico broke out in 1846 Kearny was a brigadier general at Fort Leavenworth when orders came down directing him to advance with the Army of ... read more

Sometimes you just have to go to a nice place, green, cool, where you can get in touch with your muses... or with each other... So here is a recommendation: a couple of nights at the Castle Creek Inn, which is next to the Castle Creek Golf Country Club, in Escondido. The rooms at this place are beautiful - the beds are soft, the linens are warm, and when you open the door a cool, pine-smelling breeze comes in. I don't know what it will do to you but this place makes me want to read and write. The Inn has a nice size pool and three hot tubs. There's lots of green around because it's next to a golf course. The course has a restaurant/bar where you can get your meals and at night time ... read more

Well, today we took a gamble by going to the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park. Michelle N had recommended for us to go to the San Diego Zoo, as she said it was one of the best zoos she has ever been to - that's saying something coming from Michelle. The Wild Animal Park did not disappoint one little bit. It was a 1 1/2 hour drive from where we are staying in Anaheim. From the moment we walked in you could tell it had a fantastic set-up. As we entered we walked through a netted bird aviary, where there were a few different species of birds. Then we went through and saw the flamingos on the way to seeing the elephants. After having a quick look at the elephants we went back to the ... read more

Escondido 5 - 7th November We had a relaxing morning catching up with the blog and chilling out in the hammock in Simon and Nicki´s back yard. After lunch we took a visit to some beautiful meditation gardens with an exotic array of plants and flowers and a stunning view point over looking the sea. Emma wasn’t feeling too well so we headed back to their house stopping off at the supermarket so Doddy could get some ingredients to cook us all spaghetti carbonara for tea. After dinner we watched Simon do some glass blowing with him making us each a personalized shot glass, cheers Simon, before going to bed for our last night in the States. The next morning we went to the local shopping mall to get some supplies for South America. After lunch ... read more

(02-21-09) Steve's a big fan of bike racing so for the 4th year in a row, we attended the Tour of California bike race. This year we went to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to watch the 5 lap circuit. It was a lot of fun and we were actually able to see our favorite racers. The kids got a nice souvenier t-shirt with the race map on the back, and hats with logos of their favorite racers. Sunday we went down to Escondido to watch part of the uphill race. Can't believe how fast they go up those steep hills! If you blinked, you would have missed it! After they passed we headed back down to Grand St, visited the sponsor booths for free goodies and tried to watch the final stage finish at the ... read more

It seems as though we meet more people who have a connection in Costa Rica every day- found out today Olivia from school has bought a place down there. Also talked to another blogger, and we are going to meet when we get down there. Seems like people who have already gone through this will have some good advice. Meanwhile, all the shopping is done, and tomorrow I deliver Gus to the MacNeils and los gatos to Lara. I am looking forward to the warm weather- it is COLD in southern California! Love to all, Lydia... read more
