Death Valley was something else. 95f in the shade and a whole lotta sand. Kings canyon was pretty cool.....lots of giant Sequoia trees!! All the rest of the parks were loads of fun, especially Lake Tahoe. We took the kayaks out and the day just couldn't get any prettier.....and i caught trout for dinner!!! Crater Lake was breathtaking!!!!! We did the loop and had a nice quiet lunch on the rim.... read more

This morning, I drove north through the valley. The road runs along the mountain foothills where they reach the desert floor. The heat is nearly unimaginable. The road has multiple signs warning of flash flood danger. They look about as silly as the signs in the mountains warning to carry tire chains. At the right time of year, both of them become deadly serious, as the sand streaks across the road make quite clear. Scotty's Castle Near the northern end, the paved road turns east into Grapevine Canyon. Immediately, the heat drops. It continues to drop as the road travels up the canyon, until it becomes almost bearable. Yuccas and other desert plants appear. Eventually, the road reaches a surreal sight in this empty desert, a large adobe house on the... read more

Today we drove from Bishop into Death Valley. It got progressively hotter as we made our way into the park, peaking at 102 degrees. The scenery is lovely, with the mountains all around. We planned to stop along the route for lunch at a place called Panamint Springs. Unfortunately, it was such a small place that by the time we had got there, we’d left it! It only took about 5 seconds to drive through. We did manage to stop at the next place - Stovepipe Wells - for a sandwich. We then carried on to Furnace Creek where we stayed the night. The ranch is nice with several eateries and a shop. I went for a swim in their pool but the water was almost too hot. It is spring-fed and stays at 82 degrees. ... read more

DAY 11 I got up at 8 30 and packed my stuff ready to leave Vegas. Checked out through the tv system which allows you to skip the long checking out queue in the lobby and got a taxi for $13 to Dollar rent a car where I had to wait an hour as they guy in the front office spent 45 minutes sorting two British couples who had messed up their reservation. Finally I got my car, I just went for the cheapest 5 door car this time because I wasn’t planning to drive a lot really, so I got a claret Nissan Versa. Not a very appealing car but does the job. I put the Death Valley address in my tomtom and set off towards the Death Valley. As soon as you get out ... read more

We entered Death Valley on Tuesday from the southeast in the early afternoon. I was expecting to find somewhat monotonous scenery once we were driving along the valley floor. Was I ever wrong! We spent the afternoon driving and stopping at sights along the way...I read aloud to Bill from the guide book, discovering how Death Valley was named (by Mormons) and being reminded about Twenty-Muleteam Borax... We took the scenic road called Artist's Palette, and were amazed by the colors. There were some flowers blooming, but not as many as in Anza Borrego. We watched the sunset (almost) from Zabriskie Point before starting the long drive out of the Valley, and to a hotel that would get us close enough to home to make it back in two more days. We were never below 4000 ... read more

We all have images and beliefs about an area before we visit. It’s fun to go somewhere and discover the truth and learn enough so that it has more dimension and truth. If we had driven thru Death Valley, my view probably wouldn’t have changed very much, but by staying for 5 nights and visiting various areas and attending ranger talks, my view is very different from when we arrived. We drove in from the south end of the park to Furnace Creek and the view and plants were what I was expecting. It’s a desert with the small shrubby plants growing, but there were hints of something more as we passed some areas. Furnace Creek had greenery and palms and a green golf course and I wondered where the water came from and how wasteful ... read more

We made sure that we had a full tank of petrol and a lot of water and we headed off to Death Valley. Las Vegas was hot, but it got progressively hotter as we drove. The highest it reached was 112°F (or about 44°C to us). Quite cool by Death Valley standards apparently. We were driving to the aptly named Furnace Creek and we were five miles away when we were stopped and the road was closed because of a fire that had broken out by the side of the road. They estimated that it would take two hours to sort out, but the last thing we wanted was to be sat in a traffic jam in Death Valley, so we took an alternative route - a route that was 110 miles and took two hours. ... read more

Men, men, men…! Vores held må være sluppet op ved søløverne på Pier ... read more
