We had more storm threats during the night and were afraid that we would have a rainy day. That fear almost came through...Tom was once again camp chef. He prepared what he calls Mountain Man Breakfast as he once again used his handy dandy fire pit Dutch oven. This delectable concoction consisted of eggs, sausage, cheese, potatoes, and I am not sure what else. The end result looked like a quiche and was beyond delicious. As it happened, about ten seconds after we all sat down at the picnic table to partake of this treat, the rain once again started to fall. It is amazing how fast you can move when your food is threatened for sure! Within what felt like was 30 seconds, we all had our plates, drinks and silverware picked up and placed ... read more

We actually were awakened around 4:00 this morning to a horrific thunderstorm. It must have been really close because the lightening would light up inside the motor home. However, we were snug and safe inside our little cocoon! By the time we were up and about and ready to start our day, the rain had stopped and the air was much cooler than yesterday evening. Our plan this morning was to hitch a ride in the Big Blue Truck and go to the Petit Jean Mountain overlook and the historical site of Petit Jean’s gravesite. The view from the top of the bluff looking out over the Arkansas River was almost 180 degrees. It was magnificent. There we saw once again some of the huge rocks that make up Petit Jean Mountain. I hope the pictures ... read more

For those of you who live in Wilson County...we can no longer say that we have most of the rock in the world. That title HAS to belong to the area in Arkansas known as Petit Jean State Park. We have never seen the beat. Rocks, and I mean BIG rocks, comprise a big part of this park. We met up with “the kids” at 8:45 and headed out in their big blue truck to the trail head for Cedar Creek Trail. I think they were trying to kill us. Kim—if this is their time to check and see if we are still competent and yours and Mike’s is the next time—you can check with your sister and get what should be a good report on us. We kept up (with only a little help hauling ... read more

We had a lot of rain through the night last night, and we were surprised that it really wasn’t very humid this morning. We pulled out of camp at 9:00. We were truly amazed at what a good state of repair I-40 W is in. I think we were both sort of dreading the drive especially west of Memphis heading towards Little Rock. In the past it has been really bumpy. Again—a reminder to all of our non-RVing friends...you are essentially driving your house down the road. Therefore any bumps in the road at all bounces your dishes, silverware, and anything else you might have around. A REALLY rough road can cause your jaws to clench because of the jingles and rattles. Trust me when I say smoother is definitely better! Also, we were surprised as ... read more

I woke up this morning to a world of grey. That cold front from yesterday had decided to hang around, so everything was low overcast clouds and drippy rain. Still, my rest last night has improved my spirits and I want to see things. Arkansas is something of an anomaly. Half the state is covered by mountain ranges, in a part of the country that is otherwise flat plains. The soil here was incredibly tough to farm, so they were settled by the same types of people who flocked to the Appalachians a half century earlier. Like in the Appalachians, they lived self-sufficient, isolated, and often materially poor lives; and their descendents are still here (see ). The end result is that both the scenery and the culture... read more
