On this particular day we woke up with the goal of making it to the Grand Canyon. We planned a couple of stops. One would be at Petrified Forest National Park and of course Winslow, Arizona. Why??? Just so I could stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, of course. Vincenzo was a bit mystified about my mission. Hopefully you aren't...... read more

I wrote this last night but then had no internet service at the rest stop. Having driven for about 15 hours it is 12:30am Tues which finds us at the rest stop at the Arizona/New Mexico border. After driving for about 20 minutes from home I saw Justin’s pillow and remembered mine sitting on my bed at home safe and sound. I decided that I would not go back but would use one of the foofoo ones in the RV for now. If we get to go on to a job then I’ll just buy a new one. We drove first to Lancaster to see my mom who I haven’t seen since prior to China. We met at In-n-Out Burger which is close to her house. I decided to park in their lot instead of the ... read more

We aren't actually in Winslow tonight but have to get caught up on sharing pictures....so here we go. In these pics you will see Gail and Sue standing on the corner. There are murals painted on the sides of the buildings that look almost life-like. There is very little that keeps the town going these days since Interstate 40 took over for the infamous Route 66. There were only 2 little souvenir shops opened on Memorial Day (besides Denny's) when we first arrived. The trains still travel thru Winslow several times every day as they cross east-west corridor of northern Arizona. Gail had been singing Take it Easy since we arrived in this part of the state...so of course, we had to buy an Eagles CD so we could listen to the whole song.... read more

It was really by chance that we came upon this place. We asked a lady in one of the 2 stores open on Memorial Day where we could get a good meal...she directed us to the La Posada, about a block down Route 66. La Posada Hotel, the “last great railroad hotel,” was built in 1929 for the Santa Fe Railway. If you ever come this way, you have to make sure to spend at least a day looking at this place. At least, plan a meal in the Blue Turquoise room. La Posada’s story weaves together two extraordinary visions. It begins with Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, an architect of the 1930's, and Fred Harvey, who hired Colter to design the hotel. It embodied her vision, from its architecture down to its finely crafted details. La ... read more

Serendipity is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something else entirely. Yes, Priscilla, there is serendipity... We were either exploring, sleeping or did not have wireless access for the past 48 hours so there were no postings so before we head out today, we thought we would catch everyone up with what we are doing and where we are. On Sunday morning we thought we would take a day trip to the Petrified Forest, north east from Sedona. There had been almost torrential rains in Sedona on Saturday evening and Sunday was sunny and bright so all the tourists were out in full force. As we left the Kings Ransom hotel in Sedona, we headed north. We snaked our way thru Sedona and headed north on Hwy 89, which ... read more

This one is one of our favorite places to stay. An old railroad hotel painstakingly being restored - to offer a grand setting to unwind in. There's a lot of history to this place. The recent history begins with Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter and Fred Harvey, who hired Colter to design the hotel. But La Posada closed in 1957; for the next 40 years, its future remained tenuous. Enter Allan Affeldt and his wife Tina Mion. Affeldt heard about the hotel and purchased it in 1997 after much negotiation, bringing with him a strong vision and commitment for returning La Posada to Colter’s original concept. Restoration started immediately and continues today. The drive to LaPosada from Phoenix usually takes us 4 hours. We love the food @ the Turqoise room. You have to eat it to ... read more

From Grand Canyon we headed south to Flagstaff and there were those two digits popping up again as we spied our first 66 attraction, the Museum Club. Unfortunately at 11 A.M. we were about 12 hours too early in the day to appreciate the atmosphere and enjoy any live music in the place voted ‘Readers favourite Dance club’ in ‘Country America Magazine’ but we were able to pop in and enjoy the route 66 print material in the booths and the amateur taxidermist owner’s handiwork. Passing the famous wooden carved Twin Arrows, that had obviously seen better days, our next detour was just 6 miles south of our main route to the world’s best-preserved and first proven meteorite impact site. Amazingly our ‘tour guide’ of the hole in the ground managed to make the ‘tour’ last ... read more
