The petrified forest was just amazing... we'll let the pictures speak for themselves! All the logs you see are actually stone, thus the name petrified forest. They are 225 million years old.... this place used to be a sub tropical forest!... read more

Kate here... We weren't originally planning on stopping for the night in New Mexico, but Palo Duro Canyon in Texas proved to be unworthy of two nights, at least to the 4 of us. So we found a few lakes near I-40 in New Mexico that looked like they might offer some decent camping. Santa Rosa Lake was the first stop, but it was not much to see. The primitive camping was far away from the water and had little to no shade. So we decided to take a bit of a longer drive south to Sumner Lake, which happens to be just a few miles away from the grave of Billy the Kid, for those of you interested in such things. This lake was also not much to look at, a big body of brownish ... read more

Shay here, sitting in a KOA campground in Holbrook, AZ. This place has the works! Free wi-fi, showers, a pool. We are in heaven. And no bugs! It's hot, but that's to be expected in a desert, I guess. The big to-do today was that Kate woke up this morning covered in a poison ivy rash. Poor thing. So she spent the day trying not to scratch and rinsing herself off with special soap every chance she got, while I searched for a pharmacy for more itch stuff and then spent the afternoon at a laundromat washing all our clothes and sleeping bags. She did get to relax in the pool for awhile, which cooled her off and helped with the itching. The rash seems to be clearing up and she's doing much better tonight. And ... read more

We woke up to a sunny day, without a clue of the evil that would present itself in a short time. Blissfully unaware, Mom and I headed to the deluxe continental breakfast. They weren’t lying, it was deluxe. There were waffle makers and biscuits & gravy. The only thing missing was skim milk. Had to choke down the 2%. Blech! Dressed and ready to go (including my Target argyle flip-flops), I headed out to load the car (notice a trend here?). I was nearly done, taking one of the last loads out, when I went down. Hard. It seems that there was a chunk of pavement missing where I stepped. My foot rolled onto my ankle, and into the hole, and I landed smack on my knees. Somehow I kept enough composure to keep from swearing ... read more

Since today's major attraction - Painted Desert and Petrified Forest - was at the west of Gallup, NM, I had to drive backward (to the west) for about 80 miles. Painted Desert and Petrified Forest were two national parks in one. Here you could see beautiful desert with colors so vibrant that you would not normally imagine for a desert. The colors ranged from pink, orange, purple, and red at the front park to black, gray, brown, and yellow at the back park. The petrified woods were from a forest dated back to the pre-dinosaurs age. The polished ones in the visitor center were beautiful. Those left in the wild were much rougher but carried with a lot of characters. There was also an Indian pueblo ruin site in the park. Ancient Indian lived here thoundsands ... read more
