blog 10-21-17 Page, AZ to the Grand Canyon, AZ by way of Flagstaff
Today was one for the books. It started by getting up at 6:15 am to get out of the campground and to the lube place to get the oil changed in the motorhome. It was just a little over 3000 miles since last done and this was a perfect opportunity to get it done because we were leaving Page to go to the Grand Canyon and we knew there wouldn't be a shop there. We had checked out the shop before going and knew they opened at 8 so we wanted to be there early.
It was 7:58 when Ginnie pulled into the driveway and I was driving the car and close behind. The attendent motioned for Ginnie to pull into the bay and we knew we were next. I made a fast trip to Walmart for 2 items I forgot then returned to find things wrapping up.
We were on the road by 9:30 and headed south on 89 past Vermilion Cliffs, over a pass and down the hill to the valley below where the road ran along the cliffs, not over them. It
was a 2 lane 65 mph road with an occasional passing lane but basically a good road. There were occasional mounds, some gray, some pitch black and some just the ground color of red and brown mix.
Watson's leg had gotten worse that morning and I decided to find a vet and the nearest one was in Flagstaff. I had called the vet in Page on Friday about 12:20 and discovered that he left for the weekend at noon. IF it was an emergency he would come in but I didn't think it was that serious. Well, this morning he took a flying leap to go 2 little steps and didn't make it and cried. That did it. I called the office in Flagstaff and they said to just come in when we got there.
The short version is that the Dr thinks Watson has a sprained ligament in his right elbow and a week of anti inflamitories and pain meds and very limited activity will make him fit again. If he isn't better in a week he needs to have an orthopedic evaluation. Great! That will have to wait til we get home.
So loaded with
pain meds and non steroidal anti inflammatory we left the vets in Flagstaff at 4 pm having gotten there about 12:30. It was a good 1 1/2 hr drive to our campground at the grand canyon and we were heading west. Yes, the sun is in your face. Only 30 miles then we headed north through a pinyon pine forest. That helped with the sun and before too long we were at the campground. Grand Canyon Camper Village was our destination and we found our campsite and couldn't believe how small it was. We pulled the camper in but there was hardly enough room to open the door without banging into the picnic table with our neighbor right there.
I went to the office in the hopes of changing our site and yes they had 2 we could choose from. Not bad sites but we couldn't open the sewer cover someone had closed it so tight on both sites. I again went to the office to see if they had a tool to open them and one of the people came up to see what was going on. She couldn't get the lids off either so she told us
of another site we could try.
Well, by this time it was dark. This whole trip Ginnie said she didn't want to drive in the dark but here we were driving around trying to find a site that worked in the dark. Finally, site 117 worked, Ginnie drove in, we hooked up the electric, I got the car and we were settled for the night.
Poor Watson was still zoned out from the sedation for his x rays, he looked like a space cadet. I carried him outside to pee and back in again. He ate dinner and went back to sleep. He has to have limited activity for one week, crate when we are not home and NO jumping. Should be a fun week.
It is now 9:15 pm and the outside temperature is 31 F...... degrees. What are we doing here! I will try to look for meteors but don't think I'll last long.
