Thursday, November 22, 2007, Thanksgiving Day
On the road again, with my children in Elan’s car again. Not getting to drive again…. And so we are back again on a road trip to Fairbanks to celebrate Thanksgiving with Jim, Kathy & John.
We planned on leaving at 7 or 8 this morning but it did not happen till 9AM. I think that while at one time driving to Fairbanks was 7 or 8 hours now it is less time. Elan was mentioning that the trip seemed much longer as a kid. He needed his pillow, blankets, books, cd’s, walkman and his teddy bear. Now we just hop in the car and we are off. Molly of course still has Sugar Plum who is a world traveler.
Checked the road conditions and the road was supposed to be icy but for the first part was great, some snow and ice at mile 100 to a bit past Cantwell. Past Denali Princess the roads are bone dry again and very little snow. Looks like early fall. The scenery is beautiful as usual. Heading up to Denali Park the mountains reflected blue.
We saw a herd of caribou off to
the side. No, they did not look like bales of hay. No other wildlife though, not even roadkill.
Sun is still out and the skies are clear with only a few clouds scattered around. This would be the most sun we’ve seen in a long time. I got to drive a little but then Elan was fed up with me trying to learn how to use his cruise control and get the feel of his car again so he took over the wheel very quickly. Just went over the Jack Coghill Bridge to the Interior.
Been having fun listening to Molly & Elan go back and forth and of course listening to Elan yet again telling me to keep typing and not pay attention to the road. Some reminiscing of when they were little and their memories of other road trips to Fairbanks and Kenai. That part is definitely fun to listen to.
Only 70 miles left and it is only 2pm. Thought we’d get in by 6pm, guess we’ll be early… And since Denny can make it to Fairbanks in short time now Elan would like to do it too. Bother them both!

Thanksgiving4
There is a herd of caribou laying down in the distance sadly not with us any longer, she was sold to another owner. But as Elan mentioned without her to tell us how long we have he does not try to race the clock, well not much anyway. Molly is patiently reading in the back seat and keeping an eye out for roadkill, which is not readily abundant this time.
2:30pm sun is beginning to go down or at least behind the mountains. 44 miles to go. Roads have been fabulous. It will be great to get in earlier than planned, more time to watch Xena!

Arrived in Fairbanks by 3 something. Helped getting the dinner ready. Dinner was wonderful! We ate in the new kitchen above the garage. Lots of fun for all 10 of us. Molly took the little kids outside to make a snowman, complete with a carrot for a nose.
Looked at the ads for Friday morning but did not find anything we just had to get up for at 5am. Figured if we got up and felt like going out then we would.

Stayed up late last night watching Xena! Our tradition on Thanksgiving
Railroad crossing
This railroad crossing is solar powered an wind powered! is to have a Xena marathon and we definitely fulfilled that tradition! At least Kathy, Elan & I did. Molly & John went out for a bit.
Jim, Molly and I did get up yesterday around 9 or so and went to Freddie's. Found a couple of things but nothing that was so great. It only got light around 9:30 or rather began to get light then. Got dark around 3ish. Mostly cloudy. Had turkey dinner again last night.
Today we slept in, exactly what one should do on vacation! Later we are planning to go to Chena Hot Springs.
