Monday August 6, 2007 This morning the sun was out and the first thing we had to do was get our wheel alignment checked. We have driven 6750 miles since June 14th! We had an 8:00 am appointment. We left there around 10:45 am with two new front tires and since the sun was STILL shining we decided to hike Flat Top mountain. Flat top is THE mountain to hike in Anchorage. It’s the most popular hike in the area; a mile and a half steep rocky trail that ascends 1700 feet. At the top there is a 360 view of the city, the mountains and Cook Inlet. We started to the top about 11:30 am and it wasn’t too crowded. The first part of the trail was steep, but the path was wide. The second ... read more

Sunday August 5, 2007 It wasn’t raining when we got up, but the clouds were heavy and slate grey so it was still a possibility. Based on the advice of the Campground Hostess, we headed for the Alaska Botanical Gardens. She recommended the nature hike for the chance to see bear or moose within the city limits. The Gardens were very pretty and the Garden Club had had a show yesterday and the winners were still on view. The flowers in the garden were wet and combined with the cloudy sky, the colors of the plants were saturated - great for photography. We enjoyed the nature walk. There were lots of berries (autumn is coming to Alaska) and different birds. We actually saw a bull moose. He had run across a road and then up the ... read more

Saturday August 4, 2007 It was a rainy day so we thought it would be a good morning to visit the Alaska Museum of Natural History. It turns out that it’s a small non-profit museum that targets children. It has a lot of exhibits on animals, dinosaurs and fossils and it was a “hands-on” type of place so I know kids enjoy it. We did. We’re into that sort of thing. After lunch we visited the Earthquake Park -- - not much there. It’s small and we walked around in the rain a while. Then it was time to do some grocery shopping. It was raining hard in the late afternoon so we returned to the campground. We are staying at the Anchorage Municipal Campground, which is nice. There are trees and space, but no hookups. It ... read more

We are just hours from heading toward our Alaskan journey with Madison.....I think this is the 5th year Dick and I have taken her on an annual Grandparents trip and she chose Alaska. Today we fly from home to Anchorage, try and get some sleep (we're all excited you know plus the constant daylight is a little difficult) and spend some time on Thursday exploring Anchorage before heading to Homer then Valdez. The one sad note is that Shane left Alaska a couple weeks ago so we won't get to see him until mid August. This poor ole mama just missed her boy something fierce. I'll try to be consistant with this blog so perhaps you can journey with us and if I figure out how to upload pictures that will add to the interest;-)... read more

Server Crash Sorry republishing this old blog, and bothering you all with another email. Travelblog's server crashed and the lost many blog entries. I had to recover the blog and republish it for it to get back on the server. BIAP and the Parable of the Vineyard Workers June opened up in tent city at BIAP (Baghdad International AirPort). Our unit had been having trouble getting guys out for leave on time. Some of the guys missed out on seeing relatives because of the delays, so our unit took the first possible chance to get us out of there. That put us at BIAP five days early, so we just hung out in the transient tents on that FOB until our turn to fly out. I almost got caught up on my "Bible in One Year" ... read more

I'm a couple days behind on the blog so here goes.....we bailed on the half marathon on Saturday and ran the 5 miler, which is actually 5.6 miles and I got 5.92 by my Garmin GPS watch. The race was pretty uneventful except for some pretty steep and unexpected hills. One of the marathoners we met had a moose run alongside him for about ten minutes and another bunch ran into a bear - no confrontations, it left peacefully. I couldn't believe the amount of runners who were with the Team In Training Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. There had to be at least a few hundred of them, and in total they raised something like five million dollars - we met two survivors out on the course who were three and eleven year survivors, just ... read more

Today we got up early to pick up our race kits for tomorrow - crappy schwag, no free stuff but tons of really nice people and a neat guy from LDI on the Jersey shore who swears we have a double in his bar every week....walked around downtown Anchorage which for a town of 277 000 is really kind of strange. The camera battery was dead so no photos of that right now but we'll have some after the race tomorrow. There were nine fires burning in the mountains when we woke this morning (two south of us and seven north) so the mountains we can see from our balcony were covered with clouds and smoke but it smelled fantastic! That cleared up mid-morning and we headed south down the Seward highway between enormous snowcaps, ... read more

after four delays and five gate changes we finally rolled into anchorage at about 9:30 pm local time. the alaskan mountain range is spectacular, even from the plane - they're just enormous and almost all snow-covered, full of ice fields and glaciers. We flew over 300 miles of mountains and then came barreling down through them to land in Anchorage. We've seen the rockies in canada and the states and they don't hold a candle to this. I can't even imagine how big Denali's going to be - it's 10000 ft higher than anything we saw on the way in.... Half the plane was filled with runners here for the marathon as well so it was a pretty rowdy de-planing, we're exhausted and it's still bloody daylight at 11:30 pm, which makes it 3am our time ... read more

First I must catch you up on doings since Kenai Fjords. Wednesday was supposed to be a day off but hiked my legs off inAnchorage which is a quarter-sized Adelaide, all very mod cons despite isolation, like ALice Springs has just one highway and rail line going through. Funny story in Federal building which houses what we would call National POarks and Wildlife- had to be security-checked just like at airport- smiling fellow asked for photo ID, couldn't find at first, said he'd trust me cos I was from Oz- THEN I found a scungy spare passport photo, his mate barely glanced at it, turned up his nose and looked away and first bloke said 'You look as though you are trying to set up a fake ID with that', great guffaws all round! but the ... read more
