The girls took it a little easy for the morning after an action packed weekend. It’s amazing how much Gabbi and Jacqui can entertain themselves in a little apartment. The games they come up with are incredible. They set up an obstacle course today including a station walking across the windowsill. Danielle had to break them away from their play temporarily for a little grocery shopping and then off to the planet walk. An eagle scout laid out a scale model of the solar system. The sun is downtown Anchorage and the planets are laid out along streets and bike paths to the south. It’s supposed to represent the amount of time it takes for a beam of light to get to each planet. For example, it only took 3 minutes to walk to Mercury, about ... read more

Danielle, Gabbi, and Jacqui visited the library in preparation for our long drive to Denali tomorrow. Then, they went back to Flattop to pick berries and do some hiking. The weather has been just great! Apparently, August can be the rainy month (last year 28 out of 31 days!). After work, we went to Kincaid Park. Anchorage may not have a ton going for it, but the park system is incredible. We hiked on some trails that are used for x-country ski trails in the winter that all had lights for when it actually gets dark around here. We had heard that there were lots of moose in the park, but didn’t see any today.... read more

Back to work. Danielle and the girls went to the Alaska Zoo. They saw polar bears, arctic fox, grizzlies, a snowy owl and whole host of other animals. Danielle talked to one of the zookeepers who told her that they would be moving the elephant to a warmer home soon. Apparently, there was a fair amount of bad press about the elephant having to deal with cold weather (made us think back to the polar bear at the RI zoo). Rumor was that Bob Barker was at the zoo that day filming and raising a ruckus. Danielle had seen a bunch of stuffed suits in golf carts zooming around (may have been him…) The girls picked me up at work and we headed south to Potters Marsh to meet up with the very nie homeschool folks ... read more

Hello folks I hope everyone is well and is having fun. Welcome to the new people I have enlisted to my blog page (you can unsubscribe yourselves if you wish). Thank you to everyone that sent me birthday wishes (unfortunately if you sent them by text message, then I never got them as there was no reception in Alaska). So I just spent two awesome weeks in Alaska. While my sister was busy getting herself married (congrats again), I was flying my way to Anchorage. The flight from Vancouver to Anchorage was lovely as you fly up the BC coast and then over the Queen Charlotte Islands and some of the Alaskan glaciers (I'm not going to comment about my reception into the US from their customs department, only to say it wasn't very nice). My ... read more

Suffice it to say that it was rainy, Anchorage is not a beautiful city, our bodies are still on east coast time, and I’m settling into a work schedule. Danielle and the girls went to the grocery store today and had some major sticker shock with prices. Everything was anywhere between 40-100% more money. We had a mother moose and her 2 calves visit us on Wednesday evening outside our “apartment”. Another highlight is that we were able to hook up our voice over internet phone and can receive calls as if we were sitting at home (although with the time difference we have had to stop ourselves from calling friends and family at 1 a.m., thinking oh it’s only 9 o’clock). The girls got an Anchorage library card to be able to take advantage of ... read more

Northern Exposure in Anchorage Fun Facts about Alaska Jumping on Alaska Air, I had no idea what the 49th state had to offer. All I had seen was some brief pages in my travel book, a few shows on TV, and had heard stories from friends like Bonnie. Bonnie and I have known each other for 10 years, and when she announced she was moving to Alaska 2 years ago, I had to ask why. Alaska has always seemed so remote, cold, and distant from the fast lifestyle of LA or the changing technologies of the rest of the lower 48 states. I imagined that the variations in 20 hours of daylight to 20 hours of darkness and then adding extreme freezing cold in the winter were just a few of the reasons that would keep ... read more

Palmer This was an area that during the depression and the dustbowl era became an experiment to see if it could be farmed. Families were selected from northern areas of Michigan, Minnesota, etc and brought to this area. There are some gigantic vegetables that grow in this area. In the campground where we stayed there was a demonstration garden with raised beds. The moose and her two calves enjoyed the large cabbages that were reaching a nice size. It was at a much better height than reaching all the way down to the ground. Musk Ox Farm We had heard about this place from my cousin Sharron, and had to check it out for ourselves. It was interesting to see these animals and to feel how soft the items were that were made from Qivuit ... read more

The final leg of my journey, Phoenix then Alaska... then home. I can remember booking my flight all those months ago and basically picking a day at random to come back. It seemed hard to believe it had actually come. I remember the first couple of weeks of my trip down in Argentina seemed to last forever (for the right reasons!) and thinking back then that how on Earth would I survive 5 months out. Well in the end it was surprising how quickly time passed by. Anyway, I arrived in Phoenix and was quickly whisked back by Richie in his swanky new Roozermobile, and ended up staying up till the sun rose chatting about this and that. I'd done most of Phoenix already, so we had a chilled day or two in unusually cool weather ... read more

The Second Bit We headed out to Whittier from Anchorage the following day, but not before another night out in Humpy's with our Swiss friends from Denali. We ended up failing to get into a karaoke bar, probably for the best really, and the poor girls got a parking ticket for their campervan. The first bit of the evening had been fun though! And who knows maybe Richie will be meeting them later in their trip... watch this space! ;) Right unlike Richie I'll try not to get distracted by all things Swiss (they do make good cheese though). Whittier is a weird place, originally a US Navy base for WWII it hasn't really expanded (not that their's much room to expand) beyond the original one building where apparently all residents of the town live.
