This blog is about how not to stay at someone’s house and a very nice drive up the scenic Matanuska Valley to the Glacier of the same name to a wide frozen valley covered in a hoar frost. I also allude to where I am headed next. One way I want to show gratitude is to those graciously opening their homes to me leave the house in better shape then I found it. Here is how it has gone so far. Just before New Year’s my Dad went to turn on the vent over his fancy Viking gas range, but it did not work. When the $60 an hour repair man showed up the following week we discovered that in the search for the disposal switch I had inadvertently flipped the switch that cuts the power ... read more

You can never step into the same river twice, for new waters are always flowing on to you.----------Heraclitus. July 7, 2005, Thursday. This is a driving day, and our first connect spot was Haines Junction, then on to Kluane. Again we got stuck on a dirt road at Destruction Bay. The water is a magnificent blue/green color, it has something to do with the crushed shells and the way the colors are absorbed by the sun, but it is beautiful. A few days after school let out in June of 2004, Justin Arnahlt and I began a bike trip to Alaska from our front porch in Portland, Oregon. We rode up the east side of the Olympic Peninsula and then up the coast through Bellingham to Vancouver. In B.C., we took the Sea to Sky Highway and then rode through central B.C. to Prince George. From there it was east to the beginning of the Cassiar Highway, which we took north into the Yukon. After riding on a severely bent axle for four days, we made it to the junction with the AlCan. From there we hitched a few hundred miles to Whitehorse, where I was able to repair my bike and finish the trip to Anchorage. Here are the emails I sent and a few ... read more

12 June -- well, today we expect to arrive at the Grand Teton National Park. In the last few days, We encountered our first rainstorm as we neared Kansas City, and - yes - the small pass-through window into the camper leaks in spite of the pounds of caulk Tom used before we left. We’ll see how bad it gets before we caulk the whole window. We’ve found that credit card companies are becoming incredibly cautious about fraud. Bear in mind that we called our CC company before we left TN, telling them that we’d be on the road to Alaska for 3 months. We had an accident with Tom’s new laptop (lemonade doesn’t mix well with electronics) and bought a new laptop in Kansas City. That caused our CC company to block the card, which ... read more
