The Duck
Our Mascot 12 June -- well, today we expect to arrive at the Grand Teton National Park. In the last few days,
We encountered our first rainstorm as we neared Kansas City, and - yes - the small pass-through window into the camper leaks in spite of the pounds of caulk Tom used before we left. We’ll see how bad it gets before we caulk the whole window.
We’ve found that credit card companies are becoming incredibly cautious about fraud. Bear in mind that we called our CC company before we left TN, telling them that we’d be on the road to Alaska for 3 months. We had an accident with Tom’s new laptop (lemonade doesn’t mix well with electronics) and bought a new laptop in Kansas City. That caused our CC company to block the card, which we discovered the next time we tried to buy diesel fuel. We called, and they unblocked the card. We told them AGAIN that we’re on the road. The next day, we stopped at the Sierra Trading Post outlet in Cheyenne WY, and then went to buy fuel. Guess what - blocked again. Another call. When buying gas, the CC company said
The Rig
Tom at Popeye's that truck stops are considered high risk, and recommended NOT using the pump card reader. Go into the store and if the card is “refused” the message may really be asking the cashier to call in to check your ID before authorizing the sale. What a pain in the butt.
Diesel prices ranged from $2.67 near Kansas City, to $2.81 in East Nebraska to $2.85 in Laramie WY. When we got off I-80 in Rawlins, prices were at $3.09-$3.15.
On June 12, we turned off I-80 on Route 287 and started our way north-west to the Grand Teton. We stopped at Rawlins for groceries and beer and checked on a restaurant we ate at our last trip. It’s still there: Rose’s Lariat on the main street in Rawlins. If you come off I-80 and drive toward downtown, it will be on your left. It’s very small, cheap, and has EXCELLENT Mexican food - full of locals.
In Rawlins, we were told that Yellowstone had snow last week, but that Route 287 is open. There’s no Verizon service.
Tom says this is the place where they make movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Many old stores and roadside restaurants look like the kind of place where the bad guy in the big pickup pulls up behind you. We have 50 fenced acres in Tennessee and are amazed at the length of woven and barbed wire fences - we can’t imagine the number of fence posts used!
