Day 2 - Travel to Coldfoot and Wiseman Today the big day to start the tour and go to Coldfoot. We were suppose to report for flight @1:00, so lot of time to get up lazily, pack and leave. Again the hotel shuttle dropped us to the tour terminal. The flight was delayed by an hour. There was nothing much to do but sit around and wait at the small office. So we took short walks, just hanging out, taking photos, getting to know rest of the group. There were 4 New Yorkers in our group, and another couple from somewhere, we did not hear much from them. Finally our tiny plane arrived at around 3:00 and we started. The flight was kind of scary in that tiny plane. And it was very very ... read more

So, I guess today would be day 6 of Matt2 touring North America, and what a journey it has already been. Perhaps a little background might be nice for those of you who know nothing of the trip. Last April while walking the streets of Brooklyn I decided that after the summer in the Great North of Alaska I would like to return to the City by means of a motorcycle. When I returned to Anchorage I was talking with Matt Stevens and Erin Ginley about my idea. When Erin elbowed Matt to alarm him to what I had said, Matt was in. So in in fact that Matt Stevens bought a bike within days, at least it seemed. We had the summer to prepare ourselves. Neither one of had ever really even rode motorcycles before, ... read more

After sitting around the Croan’s house for most of the day feeling useless as they cleaned and packed their things for the new renters, I finally left on the ferry at 4:30. Unbeknownst to me, the Matanuska ferry was last of the season. The Alaska Marine Highway system usually bumps up their schedule for the summer due to the increase of travelers—mainly motor homes and campers. In the winter there are not too many visitors to Alaska, so the ferry rates are also cheaper, but the ferries also go less often. From Juneau to Haines I paid around thirty-five dollars for a four hour trip. My backpack was half-full of books and weighed close to sixty pounds. I staggered to the ticket counter and onto the Matanuska ferry like a mule about to die. Next plan, ... read more

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 2 July 29/30, 2008 Arrived in Whitehorse and planned a couple days to recoup and renew our groceries, laundry, body and soul and plan the next phase of our Alaska trip. A trip to the visitor’s center and a look at the weather confirmed our original plan to head south to Skagway if the weather looked good and north if not. The idea being we would go down to the coast first and take the ferry from Skagway to Haines and carry on through the south area of Alaska and return via Anchorage, Denali, Fairbanks and Dawson City on the north route. While in Whitehorse we toured the Klondike - the largest paddle wheeler to traverse the Yukon River. We walked the suspension bridge over the Whitehorse Rapids ... read more

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 1 July 22, 2008 Departure day dawned bright and sunny. The truck camper’s packed (or overpacked) and our great neighbors are willingly looking after our house and yard again. Thanks! We arrived in Strathmore, AB in time to take Larry’s Aunt Jean out for supper. We camped at the Strathmore Rodeo Campground. It was nearly full of construction and oil workers. Diesel in Strathmore was $1.40.9. July 23, 2008 Our drive from Strathmore to Jasper was only about 300km but it took us all day. We didn’t stop in Banff or Lake Louise, having been there several times before. The Columbia Icefields Parkway drive north to Jasper is one of the top 10 drives in Canada. We have only driven the Parkway once before and that was 36 ... read more

An hour or so outside of Nikiski is Homer. We made reservations to stay at an RV park on the Homer Spit that evening. Was good to take a nice long shower and hang out around town. Shops are open for the summer season (end of May to end of August) along the boardwalks. You can find everything from carvings in ivory, antler, or wood to photography; even book a fishing trip or two! SPeaking of which... There was a Fishing Derby that goes on all summer long for Salmon & Halibut. We saw some HUGE fish! After 2 nights, it was time to head the RV back towards Anchorage for our final leg of the journey! The skies were still cloudy & rain followed us. Managed to get a clear break in the weather at ... read more

Why do Research? • We’re anal retentive … we actually like making lists. • Doing the research makes the journey last much longer. We can imagine what we’ll see and be thrilled when the reality is so much better. • We (think) we’re only going to Alaska once, and we want to see as much as possible. (We welcome suggestions!) Some “must sees” require early reservations, so we must ensure that we can get from Tennessee to Denali (for example) and arrive there on time. We already know that we can’t drive 500 miles a day in Alaska if we get behind. • If we have paid reservations for an activity, we hate stressing about where we’re going to stay the night before. • We’re doing a lot of boondocking, so the nights before/after, we need ... read more

South to California We started off on September 8th departing Chugiak Alaska around 11am. A cool cloudy day that promised rain, but only dropped enough moisture to rearrange the dust on the windshield. Heading northeast along the Park highway to the new freeway exchange and turned towards Palmer, had we opted to turn the other way we would have headed to Wasilla and beyond to Denali. Arriving at Palmer we then got on the Glenn Highway and continued on towards Richardson. Along the way we passed the braided Matinuska River and up ahead the glacier its self. I had the opportunity to walk on that very glacier a few years back, a strange feeling to walk on something that has in a since been dying each day. With the global warming this and most of the ... read more

Alaska, atlasta...shades of Ushuia, 20+ hours of daylight, my time orientation out of whack, time to eat? cornflakes and milk or steak and red??…looks like 2pm, actually 10pm, sunset is 12.30am, sunrise 3am!…helps to make me realise how much I wouldn’t like to be here at the opposite time of year! And it’s my anniversary, yes, 25 June 2005 I flew into LA, sometimes it seems like 12 weeks, other times, forever! The bike’s just clicked over 72.000 kms! In Vancouver I met Nigel, a ski club program director, on his 1200 Adventure (the few problems I have with the 1150 look to be sorted on the 1200….fantastic!) he invited me to stay in Whistler, it was on my way north so I did.
