We're Getting Closer! Little Gracie was helping me to sort out the suitcases this week, to try to decide who gets what, and which ones weigh the most, least, etc... when she discovered the joy of pretending to fly to Mississippi in her unzipped carry on bag. She ran to her room collected all her babies and the imagination began to twirl! Shouting goodbyes, farewells, "daddy I'll call ya when I get there" out across the house. And then as we worked a little longer, the silence fell behind us, when we turned to see that little Gracie obviously had been worn out by the flight, the hustle and bustle, the toting of her babies through the plane... so she fell fast asleep in our hall way all snuggled up in her very own carry on ... read more

Not that cheap but I need my passport in a hurry this time. THE TICKET - I usually use the Star Alliance network of airlines ( 1k member w/UAL ). It didn't seem like we were ever going to finish tying up loose ends but we did. Maybe we just threw in the towel, but whatever. At 2:45 yesterday after noon we fired up the rig and headed up Murrayhill for the last time. And at 3:01pm we got on 85 south. The journey has begun. I couldn't speak for at least an hour except for an occasional, "uh huh" when Adam would say, "Isn't this great!" I don't know why, maybe it was disbelief, or maybe I was soaking it all in. Probably a little bit of both. I have to admit, I teared up. Goodbyes are always sad. And although I was not a huge fan of Charlotte, I did enjoy greatly the friendships that I made. Our first stop was in Lincoln, Alabama. ... read more

As I sit here wandering aimlessly all over the internet searching for the 'right' Job, the 'right' house, the 'right' car my mind wanders in and out of what I could have been. Slowly as my thoughts become more coherent, and no thanks to the green tea and cigarettes, I discover myself wondering about life overseas. With always a passion in my heart to be the next great discoverer of things. I embark on this Journey to discover me and what I am made of. First stop Google...type in Joe Johnston, figure it's a great place to start. Google Knows everything...well, Joe Johnston is a Hollywood director and special effects guy...wrong Joe Johnston...Joe Johnston Alabama...well, Joseph E. Johnston a civil war general...wrong Joe Johnston again. Joe Johnston Birmingham Alabama...blank... As I embark on this journey, I ... read more

This is the first stop on our journey to see our families. After wrapping up all the details at home we had a few days to rest before we visited J's parents and relatives. We had a great time seeing everybody. a and j enjoyed going to J's cousins place to see the cows and even sang to them. Wish we had a more pictures, but we do have a picture of j swinging on their land. It was very hard for the girls to sy goodbye to our pets. It is even harder to say goodbye to friends & family! Had a meeting in Birmingham and in our free time we had a few minutes to see some of the powerful sites this city has to offer. Spent some time touring the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute which is a fairly new museum reviewing the civil rights struggle in the US. Across the street from the Institute is the 16th Street Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park. The Church is, of course, famous for the horrible 1963 racial bombing which killed four little girls. The Park contains several statues and sculptures of the famous, or infamous, photos taken during the 1950-1960s civil rights movement in the US. The Park during the civil rights movement was home to several peaceful demonstrations and marches about racial inequality and violence. The middle of the Park contains a fountain which is ... read more

Tamara was in her junior year of high school so we decided to check out colleges in which she had shown some interest in the Southeast. 12 April 2003 Saturday. Our first stop was Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. She wasn’t impressed, but Rosanna and Will were. Rosanna eventually went there and graduated in 2010. From Blacksburg we drove down the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way to Asheville, North Carolina, where we spent the night. The girls stayed at the hotel and got supper from room service. Will and I explored the town. We stopped at a Chinese restaurant and ordered. Will told the waitress this was the second best meal he had ever eaten. She asked what the best was. He replied, “I haven’t eaten it yet.” Back at the hotel, there was a prom ... read more

The bus between Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana, isn’t full. Not even close. I find an empty seat in the back of the bus. A girl is sitting on seat on the opposite side. Fairly attractive, mid-twenties. She's from South Carolina, speaks with that wonderful southern accent you just have to love. She's mixing her soda with vodka. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on the Greyhound bus she explains, and she has to hide it. Gives me a sip of her mixed drink, although "I never let anyone taste my drinks". She's an exotic dancer. She knows how to make that extra buck. Smile, and they will give you money. Even if you’re having a bad day - smile. Extended customer service? She hasn’t seen her child in many years. The father took it away, and ... read more
