Hola from Mexico!!
Don´t worry we were nowhere near the hurricane that hit!! Mexico is huge!!
So have to admit, I did not have any intention in staying in Mexico, due to thinking it could be very touristy! However I have been proven wrong and absolutely love Mexico! I cannot wait to come back and do more of the country, when I am fluent in Spanish!! Because of course for us, the prices always seem different.....grrrr!!
So we started in Cancun, we arrived in one huge rain storm!! After getting drenched and being grumpy after falling ill from some water/ice in Cuba, we found a hostel to stay! Due to the rain we stayed in Cancun a couple of days, we loved having home comforts again. Matt especially loved going to the cinemas in ENglish for 4 pound a ticket bargain!! We were probably the only people that go to Cancun and don´t go partying, but we had had so much rum in Mexico we decided to have a break and just drink cheap red wine...hahaha!! Not quite party animals anymore haha!
After Cancun, we headed for Chitzen Itza - a Mayan village. We set
off for the park, however on arrival we realised we only had an hour and half till close! Matt being a ruins geek was not happy about this. But anyway we took our time around the ruins, which were spectacular even if we did get hassled to buy every mask, necklace and monkey noise ornmament in sight!! We decided to leave the big pyramid till last, to avoid the tourists in our photos (I don´t do photoshop!) However when we went to go there, they informed us it was now closed. Of course we were gutted, so we quickly made a run for it through Mexican security and posed.....haha they weren´t happy and some women chased us! But Matt still didn´t get all the pics he wanted, so we went back AGAIN the next day! I could teach a lesson on Chitzen!! We had plenty of time this time round and took plenty photos and guess what the sun came out for the first time in like 4 days in Mexico........wooohooo.
After Chitzen we headed to Merida. A very beautiful town. We took the second class bus, to save money. The bus bassically dropped every single mexican
home for the night. We also got sold nuts, chicken, crisps, drinks on board and a lovely guy played the guitar for us haha. The first night in Merida was eventful! At 1am I was woken up by a digger, yes work men were working at a ridiculous hour, some sort of gas or oil problem i´m not really too sure.
Unfortunately Matt fell sick with pansie flu so I decided to go and make some new friends. I met two guys from South America and a girl from US and Uk. We all spent the day drinking beer in the sea....that is the life. The next day we all went to some cenotes near Merida and had a bbq!! I was so happy to have bbqs.....I have to admit, I HATE mexican food. I ate it for two days and since then I never want to see another tortilla in my life!! We had a brill time in Merida with our new friends, so many laughs 😊.
Our friends then dropped us off in Valadoid, where we visited some more cenotes! These were amazing, deep down in the caves. One new experience I can tick off.
So then it was time to head to Tulum, the place which everyone raves about so I was very excited to see what was in store. I have to say I love this place - it is beautiful, the beaches are amazing and it has so many healthier food restaurants! I can avoid tortillas!! One of my best experiences has definitely been swimming with turtles. Something I have tried to do many times, but has always been unsuccessful. We swam with them in the grand cenote and also in sea, right from the shore!
Mexico has really proven me wrong and i´ve loved this country. We´ve had beautiful weather in the end, met some great people, had some great new experiences and picked up more of the spanish language. Matt is loving his hola senorita and la cuenta por favor!!
The rain is now back tonight but it´s on to the next country for more adventures and paying the non speaking spanish prices of travelling.
Adios amigos xx
