March 28, Saturday We decided to press on towards the coast, even though the Hotel Iturbide was a nice little place. A careful extraction from the lobby’s slippery tile floor and over the curb into the street and away we rode again. The rest of the ride out of the mountains was again a twisty-lover’s paradise, and then on to the coastal plains, interrupted occasionally by lines of small hills. We made a stop for motorcycle oil in Linares, found a Honda shop so it was pretty easy. Half a liter refill for Bear, and on the way again to the coast. At a break atop one or the other of those hills, I asked the 5 guys sitting around by a truck if they knew the town of La Pesca, right on the gulf coast. ... read more

We left Dallas the morning of Monday, December 8th. Drove to South Padre Island for the night; we figured a tourist area would be the best spot to spend the night along the border, and it is only a twenty minute drive to the border from South Padre. We stayed at the KOA, not a bad spot, weather was great, the only bad point was that the showers here do not have hot water, not even cold, in fact very much ICE COLD! Crossing the border into Mexico wasn't bad at all. No lines. All of the people were friendly and helpful. Only one wrong turn in Matamoros and only one "almost" accident when Leila forgot to stop for the stop sign. North half of Tamaulipas (the Mexican state that borders Texas) was very flat farmland. ... read more

Day 347 - Thursday 11 September We arrived into Matamoros around lunchtime and im actually surprised at how big the place is. Its far bigger than any of the other border towns I've been too but like many of the others theres absolutely nothing to do here. As we were not crossing until tomorrow morning we checked into a nearby hotel. Its an absolute dive and not cheap but will do for the night. With nothing to do I spent most of the rest of the day and evening twidling my thumbs waiting for tomorrow.... read more

Gulf Coast: 12th July - 21st July From Victoria, We took the bus to Tampico on the Gulf Coast. The buses we had got so far in Mexico were very comfortable, with reclining seats and clean toilets and were also quite cheap. When we arrived in Tampico, we caught a bus into the Centro to try and find a hotel. The one we tried first was called Hotel Capri and had rooms available that were pretty cheap so we checked in. It wasn't luxurious but it would do for the two nights we were going to be there. We went out for a walk around the central plaza which was typical of most Mexican towns. This is where lots of locals come to sit and chat or stroll around. Generally there is a church on one ... read more

We just returned from an extended weekend in Northern Mexico to attend a wedding in Cuidad Victoria, capital of the border state of Tamaulipas. It was our honor to witness and celebrate the nuptials of two good friends, Micah Looney of Texas/New Mexico and his lovely bride Zyanya Anaya, a native of that city. Everything was splendid, from the ceremony to the party, from the world-renown Mexican hospitality we received to the great company we enjoyed. It was a pleasure and a lot of fun getting to know and hanging-out with all of the couple's family and friends. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story, but first allow me to say that we couldn't be happier for Micah and Zyanya, la pareja feliz who are chilling-out in the bathtub-warm waters of the Rivera ... read more

Note: The details here are woefully lacking. Most of the group was at the 2nd site, and so I don't know much about what they did (except that they were working on a classroom for special needs children... painting, installing insulation, doing trim-work, and so forth). This was my third mission trip to Mexico and second with First Presbyterian. As with last year, we spent two days in-transit to Valle Hermoso with a night stopover in Texas. I was exhausted most of the way down... up too early... drive all day. By the end of the first day (and being on the road over 15+ hours), a lot of us were not, um, in the best of spirits. The second day in-transit was better as there was more to do... shopping for groceries at Wal-Mart, crossing ... read more

Hey y'all! I hope life is treating you well wherever you are! 24 hours ago I was looking out at the Gulf of Mexico, letting the saltwater tickle my toes, and enjoying some great fish empanadas... "We should travel this weekend..." --that's pretty much how this all started... James suggested we take a weekend trip, because he doesn't want to go back to Australia having regretted staying in Monterrey every weekend this semester. Soooo, Christin, James and I went back to my place, looked through the Lonely Planet Guide book and checked out a few places at the recommendation of our most recent mesero (waiter). We looked at Real de Catorce, Zacatecas, Tampico... Since none of us had yet been to the BEACH in Mexico, we decided to travel to Tampico, which is located in the ... read more

March 3, 2006 A trip up the mountain to El Cielo Biosphere in a cage truck... It was a dark and stormy night…well, not stormy, but definitely dark. And, oh, the stars! No light pollution down here. The night was restless, anticipating the knock on the door from Karen, the designated wake-up caller, listening to Mexican music in the middle of the night coming from the Nopalita plant next door where they package the pads of the prickly pear, hearing the click click of the room’s ceiling fan, barking dogs, and, early in the morning listening to the dew drops, like rain, falling from the leaves. We enjoyed breakfast in the dining room. Kerrie a young man from Wisconsin was here doing a bird study. He ate at a nearby table. We had a fruit dish ... read more

The university decides to stay at the Laredo - Texas side for insurance and security reason, but we are free to go to the Mexican side of the town - Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. All the vans are to stay at the hotel along Rio Grande, and we walked over the Friendship Bridge to Mexico. Just like that, we are in Mexico without even having our paperwork checked by the Mexican immigration and custom. The assignment is to observe different culture through landscape design projects in Mexico. Carrie, Sandy, Jason and I were paired up to walk around as a group, and we survived the day. We had our dinner at a small piazza tucked in somewhere and I guess it was bluntly obvious that we don’t look like Mexicans, as we hastily had to decline many ... read more
