Letting the days go by.. It's fucking hot. Weed is extremely cheap. I can smell the fresh pineapple across the table. The air is damp and still. I can usually hear the chickens and turkeys outside. A group of turkeys patrols the streets occasionally, meandering around keeping the town in order by puffing up and gobbling; we dubbed it the 'turkey mafia.' It seems like a lot of the guys spend their days going to the jungle with machetes to harvest fruits and beans, or to clear land for the ecopark. Most of the women seem to look after domestic affairs, spending a majority of the day feeding everyone, cleaning and tending to animals. Church is pretty big:. Catholics and Jehova's Witnesses. Black beans grow here and there are a million chickens, so we eat eggs ... read more

I haven't written for a couple weeks, not for a lack of material, but for a lack of time and internet. Experiences are more valuable than their record. Thus far in Mexico, the internet's estimated driving time has been significantly low. It said six hours from Mexico City to Malapasito. It was more like ten or twelve. I picked up another Agua Selva WWOOFer who happened to be on my way, early afternoon in Mexico City. We walked around downtown briefly, but didn't see much unfortunately. I was so tired of driving, I wanted to get it out of the way and stay put for awhile. Terje and I got along immediately, it was nice to have a co-pilot. I drove till I couldn't stay awake and we pulled over and pitched a tent at a ... read more

And I will say we are so glad to make it, by far the worst roads we have ever encountered in Mexico. Cuota roads, pot holes as deep as craters, washouts and plainly no maintenance in a long time. End result 1 trailer with a broken spring, 2 units with lights shaken apart our rod in the close closet jumped off and bent like an accordian it remains to be found any more damage. Leaving Catemeco we left early as no one had ever taken the MEX 180 that far down before thus we had no clue what we were going to find. We started off on a scenic libre road passing through many small towns and lots of topes. Changed to MEX 185, then MEX 145 then to Veracruz quota 180 when we reached our ... read more

April 9, Thursday We awoke early to pack, and met Rafa and Carmen in the hotel garage again. This time we were heading to La Parroquia for breakfast, then on to Villahermosa and San Cristobal, in the state of Chiapas. We picked up another couple on the way named Neder and Carla. Rafa had promised that this would be some of the best riding in all of Mexico. We rode the two lane towards Catemaco ( originally our destination instead of Vera Cruz ), but a few kilometers out of Vera Cruz Neder‘s front tire went flat. We pulled over in one the little villages and up to the Vulcanadora - the tire repair shop. It seems every little wide spot in the road has one of these guys. Unfortunately, the mechanic wasn’t there, but the ... read more

On Thursday the 5th of March Chuck and I were on the east coast of the Yucatan in Playa del Carmen for the sunrise. That day we drove across the peninsula and watched the sunset on the west coast at a beachfront restaurant on Isla Aguada, where we camped for the night. The next morning Chuck and I drove to Villahermosa, in the state of Tabasco. Villahermosa is home to La Venta Park, where there is a zoological park and a collection of monuments from the ancient Olmec cities. The Olmec monuments date from hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. La Venta Park is located adjacent to the Lagoon of Illusions, which is partially located within a city park with beautiful gardens and walking paths. After visiting La Venta Park we took a taxi ... read more

We made it to Villahermosa! Kudos to Continental for the early arriving flights and sandwiches. As we landed in Villahermosa, I had a nervous feeling, but that feeling vanished as soon as the friendly Mexican customs agents greeted us like we were related to them. Mexican hospitality! The hotel Cencalli is beautiful, with huge murals painted on the wall at the entrance. Mike, our primary guide is very friendly and Javier, our driver seems very knowledgeable about the area. Our primary mode of transporation is a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van. I just figured out our bags are sitting outside of our door, better go get them! I will try and update before we leave to go to Palenque tomorrow. ... read more

Villahermosa, 23-01-1990. We decided on an over night bus to Villahermosa which took eight hours so we would save money on a hotel. Two of our belizian friends came along to the bus depot their faces looking sour at seeing us off without any business done, too bad.....FOR THEM!!! James even took a whole cigarette pack out of the shirt pocket of one of them, the man really can over do things when he feels safe behind my back. Still....the cigarettes came in really handy for the long over haul to Villahermosa. We had a long discusion about putas to while away the long bus ride. According to James putas son como drogas but he just likes them, tell me something new, mon!!! ... read more

Villahermosa, 24-01-1990. We will have yet again another over-night bus tonight, to Palenque. Once again we will save ourselves a night in a hotel by travelling overnight. Visiting El Parque La venta which is a bit of a botanical garden full with huge stone heads left behind by the mayans who once ruled this part of the world before we the white explores in the name of the catolic god, brought progress in the way of deadly diseases and by the force of steel white arms like swords, to this part of the world. A small, blond lady trying to capture a goose on the paper of her camara caught my eye so i asked her out for dinner. her name was Aino from Finland and our dinner date ended in her bed back at her ... read more
