Hello hello, this is guest author Tracey, due to the fact Nick is currently having to stay close to a toilet...the first casualty of a dodgy tummy! I cant decide whether is it due to a bug he picked up or that fact they drizzle, sprinkle and coat most food in a chilli based product... Since the last update, we recovered in Mexico City for a day or two...did the typical tourist thing and spent the day on a hop on hop off bus...very nice indeed and we managed to leave the city all in tact. We then flew down to San Cristobal a mountain town and stayed for a couple days before we decided to get a bus to a place called Palenque...which Nick described to me a beautiful jungle village we could stay in ... read more

The rest of Mexico passed in a blur. We had about 5 days left to get back to Mexico City in time to catch our flight to Canada. We stopped in Palenque just long enough to catch the next bus to Villahermosa. There, we wandered around till all hours of the night trying to find a hotel that still had space and wasn't going to charge us super large sums of money. We stopped by one hotel that was straight out of a horror movie. The door handle just about fell off as we opened it. It had clearly been jimmied or forced open by some angry man in the past. The bed head was carved with all maner of Spanish obscenities and pleas for help. The flourescent lights flickered and the curtains billowed in an ... read more

From Palenque we took a short bus ride to Villahermosa the capital city of Tabasco state. Its a modern rich oil town, we saw several Costco outlets and they got all the fast food resturants etc. We stored our bags at the bus station and walked to the La Venta museum/park to see the massive heads and other stone work of the Olmec civilization. Hiedi and Erin, two other Canadians joined us, they had been in Chiapas for a couple weeks staying with the Zapatistas so had lots to tell about that experience. After the museum we went downtown and had some lunch and walked around before we returned to the station for a night bus to Oaxaca City.... read more

fri 27/04 - So I want the map to show all the places so some of these entries are going to be ridiculously short. We spent one night in the tackiest/kitschest pink hotel next to the bus station. We felt like we were on the run from the law! Streets are very bustly and dirty - felt just like the kingsland high street! I miss hackney. there was no veggie food here.... read more

Not Big Heads at Carnaval though. Big Olmec heads in the park/museum and yes, Carnival is happening here now - later then most other places. Wanted to get off the gringo backpacker trail - and I have definately done that here. Have see 3 other "gringo" people in this city of almost 700,000. A few Mexican tourists it seems, but while a prosperous city due to oil since the 1970s, it is not on the tourist map except for the Parqu-Museo La Venta in a nice city park where Olmec heads (Olmecs were the people in this region from about 1100-400 BC and whose relics include large sculpted heads, precursor it is thought to Mayan culture) were moved in the late 50´s after from La Venta after oil was discovered and it was feared they might ... read more
