Bob figured out last night that all the noise was coming from CocoBongo, a club a block or so away from the hostel. I guess others have complained, but the music remains loud until dawn. We did get a couple more days in the hostel for our return from Cozumel, on a different floor which will be more quiet. This is a very convenient area to restaurants and sights.
Walked our luggage down to the pier and took the 11:00 ferry to Cozumel. It was a huge, covered boat. The windows were fogged over so you couldn't see out. It took off exactly on time, swaying back and forth in the waves. They were even passing out barf bags! They were explaining their tours, scuba, snorkeling, submarines, scooters, jeeps, swimming with the dolphins. A big screen TV up front showed under water photography, and advertised restaurants, shopping, etc. Our luggage went out to a carousel where we retrieved it. There was a cruise ship in port when we arrived. The ferry moved very quickly, and we were in San Miguel, the only city in Cozumel, in half an hour.
Our hotel, Plaza Cozumel, is close to the pier. We
had reserved and prepaid for four nights, so we were very pleased when we arrived. A very nice outdoor patio in front, with wrought iron furniture and tropical plants. A bakery next door. The area was very clean and neat. Since the room was not ready, we stored our luggage and went out to explore and find lunch.
Warm today, lower 80s. We saw the usual tourist crafts, lots of embroidered clothing and bags, leather purses and boots. Saw a guy painting scenery on beer bottles. We headed to the market for an economical comida (standard lunch). Found a spot, Vero & Benji' s Place, which served Phillipine and Indonesian food. We ordered chicken soup (lots of chicken, good flavor, no feet!) and beef picadillo (also tasty). Very flavorful mango licuardo. We walked into town a short distance. Bob remembered a very good restaurant from our previous visit many years ago, but we couldn't find it. Maybe not here any more.
Back to the hotel at check-in time. Very large room, A/C, very clean, and best of all, an ocean view (which we were not expecting). Breakfast included.
Walked the Malecon later at night. Beautiful shades of
pink in the sky. Waves lapping, lights on along the ocean walk. Many statues along the way. A very pleasant, peaceful walk. We decided to bypass the higher tourist dinner prices along the Malecon, and headed back away from the ocean. Passed a place with live American country music. We walked up and down the streets for quite a while, and finally found Amigos Restaurant and Bar. All locals, live music and singers from the audience, lots of local color. Bob took a photo with the singer and a table in front. The guy at the table was very friendly, came over to talk to us. The singer was his girlfriend, and we got an email address to send on the photo. Fun evening.
Good first day in Cozumel. Pedometer read 7.6 miles.
