On Wednesday the K-State International Students traveled to the northern part of the state of Queretaro to visit a small pueblo called Bernal. The town´s main attraction is their ¨Peña¨literally meaning ´big rock.´ We had two guides from the school who lead us to the top. It was quite a hike and I was impressed at how fast the guides could go. Quite a few of the students made it to the top as well. I still haven´t discovered which mountain range these mountains are in (Uncle Travis??), but the view was beautiful! There are more flowers and plant life than I had imagined. The blast of fresh air from the top was the best reward! For our student group picture, we wanted to do the Willie the Wildcat KSU, but were afraid we´d fall off ... read more

Later that same weekend... Meghan and I woke up a bit late and headed to the Centro in a taxi. We were supposed to meet some friends to watch Mexico in the first game of the World Cup, but we couldn´t find them. So, we did the next best thing, walked about and then had a cold cappachino (or, as some of my family members say, cappachin-ee). This was the calm before the storm... We knew the game was over when more people were suddenly in the streets, all sporting green soccer shirts and bearing Mexican flags. We headed out into the streets along with them. More and more people started coming from virtually nowhere, and cars starting filing around the centro as well (kinda like cruisin´the square in Iola). Color, motion, yelling, chanting, horns beeping ... read more

The International Student Office has planned all sorts of activities and trips for us while we are here. For our first weekend, we had a Mexican dinner fiesta, complete with a mariachi band and salsa dancing. Afterwards, they reserved a club, or un antro, an optional activity for us to attend. The music there was hilarious: a lot of Brittany Spears, Ashley Simpson, and old school Jock Jams stuff. They also played a rendition of ¨Hey...Hey Baby...I wanna know...if you´ll be my girl.¨ As it got later, and more people were dancing, the music was techno. The thing about techno music is the songs never really end, so there is no convenient time to leave the dance floor. Fun but exhausting. The next day we had a picnic with our host families at the school. We ... read more

Hey All, I´ve safely arrived in Querétaro and am settling into life before classes start. I am very lucky to be within walking distance to campus and to internet cafés, the restaurant where my host mother works (Gloria), and small tiendas. I am rooming with student from Nebraska named Megan. She speaks Spanish quite well, so I´m learning a lot from her. We only speak Spanish with our house! We really made it through the airport thing well. The bus ride from Mexico City to Querétaro took almost 3 hours and was seemed very long! We arrived on campus around 10:00 and went out to eat. The restaurant was called Tacos 57 and is kind of like Chipotle, where you pick your meat and other stuffings. The toritillas are green and awesome! Then they set a ... read more
