"Kati, everyone that comes here leaves us so soon" In the Oaxacan city mornings, the haze and smog lingers around the city like a longing lover, theres no way to avoid it, it hangs off of the rooftops and leans on the streetlamps, draping it's long arms down over the tops of the heads of the bustling sidewalk crowds, bumping and pushing, perdon perdon . . . and I attempt to romanticize the pollution and the noise so I can live in it and through it each day, but it is getting to me and I'm missing the mountains and beaches. The gas truck dragging large metal scraps attached to chains behind it's bumper and playing music over a loudspeaker in our neighborhood at 7 am and the buses spewing visible diesel fumes behind them ... read more

Yesterday I met up with my new friend Rachel and her travel buddy, Janelle, at the Mercado Pochote, el mercado organico, for Rachel's birthday. We sipped tejate (http://www.go-oaxaca.com/newsletter/tejate.html) and sampled mezcal (http://www.oaxaca-restaurants.com/mezcal.htm). Vendors are generous with their samples - so maybe you'll buy more? They have everything from young and aged, con gusano to jamaica, cafe, and mandarina infused - of course all organic. After, I went on a search block-by-block of a 2-mile radius to find the hospital Alicia works at. Disheartened, I walked into the Zocalo, where I ran into Dr. Chris. I was happy to exchange one biologist for another, and we took a seat at a restaurant, where I got to hear more about his Guatemalan wife and sons, was scolded on my improper use of "quiero," heard more comical stories, and ... read more

Tim Version: * Experienced Monte Alban and Mitla ruins, and the beautiful city of Oaxaca. * Taste tested every type of Mezcal I could find, all the local beers, and copped a few heavy hangovers because of it! The version with tired blurry eyes from all that Mezcal: The bus to Oaxaca City, awesome! Cold but not deadly air conditioning, I got my windoow seat beside somenoe who yet again tried to convince me that I don't know which number is the window. I slept awesomely and awoke to beautiful, dry desert, hilly Agave cacti fields, and other taller Cacti all around. I love the sun, I really really love the sun, and nothing reflects it better than the desert! The road and most life followed a small stream winding through the shallow valley, providing a ... read more

Adios Enero! What a month. It began with working and packing, swimming and yoga, creative dates and love fit into schedules. I moved out of my house, quit my jobs, sold all of my possessions that couldn’t fit into a hiker’s backpack, said goodbye and took a flight. More than anything or anyone directly or specifically, I am missing feelings. I am missing being held. I am missing holding. I am missing shared histories and making new stories together. I am missing the indescribable experience of a giggle attack with a 12 year old. And now I am feeling strong. My knees are holding together incredibly well with at least three hours of walking a day. I think the warm weather and fatty food help a lot. I’m often very tired here, but that’s what happens ... read more

It’s difficult to force myself to sit down and write out entries late at night just before bed, but that seems to be when everything worth writing about finally settles down. Perhaps this in-between state I find myself in, where reality has shed most of its weight and hazy dreams are setting in, is actually just...perfect. Today I started to unlock the puzzle I have been living in. Now, after my second class, I am speaking in full sentences with my host family. We understand each other without outside translators, and it feels as good as breaking through a really hard level on a video game- one that you thought you wouldn’t ever really pass through so you might as well toss the entire game out. I made flashcards of everything in the kitchen and wrote ... read more

I took my first class today. We jumped straight into verbos irregulares and discussing/describing our families. Everything fit together really well in mind. Since my arrival here, I have been upset at myself for having spent so much time learning to speak German in high school and college. Now, I couldn’t be more thankful that I learned the foundations of grammar from two highly organized, strict German women. At lunch today I could form full sentences to speak with my host family. I went from being an intelligible mute to a giggly spanglishy table partner. “Voy a …. Ir…no…meet..you know.. voy a encontrar mi amigo en el Zocalo de los …six…uh…siece y diece” I also told my Dona Gude in broken Spanish that I had been a vegetarian in the United States, and had even abstained ... read more

20: 34; 27 de Enero 2009 Libro: “First World, Ha Ha Ha!” Past Seeing Mexico City from the air at night was like what I imagined as a child I would see walking across a rope bridge over a hidden tomb of gold with Indiana Jones. From the closest view I could squint at to the farthest reaches of the horizon: bright golden lights. I had never attempted to conceptualize how some 30 million people living together in one city would appear at night - but there it was. Entering Oaxaca during the day, I was amazed most (more than the way a city center had somehow managed to cast and sprawl itself into every foothill and ridge it fancied touching) by the agricultural grids adorning the surrounding hills, as if in the face of rampant ... read more

On Monday, David and I, with two other people from our hotel went to cooking school again. Our teacher greeted us at the door of her home, she was beautifully dressed in a red and white Mexican dress and had striking Mexican designed jewellery on. Not once did she put an apron on, nor did she get food on her clothing. We have always wanted to learn how to make flan and that was the first thing we learned. The most interesting part was carmalizing the sugar and water to the point where it was burnt slightly and then she coated the pan with it. Then she poured the flan mixture in, put it into a double boiler and cooked it for 30 minutes. Then we went on make squash blossom soup, made from a receipe ... read more

Yesterday, we stood by the main highway, scanning all the names of villages on the buses as they raced by. Finally the one we wanted came by, we were on our way to the largest Indian Sunday market in the state of Oaxaca. We had to step over open boxes in the isle to get a seat, an ice cream man in a purple uniform with his cart got on. Even though the trip should be about 30 minutes, it took much longer because anyone who wanted to take the bus would flag it down. It was quite exciting to be going to a new village, I didn't know what to expect. Unfortunately my guide book is in our room and I am too lazy to go and get it in order to tell what the ... read more
