We travelled from Mexico City’s main bus station to Oaxaca (pronounced ‘wah hak ah’) using an ADO first class bus (430 pesos each). The bus was surprisingly comfortable and even had a toilet on board ! We arrived at dawn and strolled down to the zocola hoping to find somewhere open for a cup of coffee. There was hardly anyone around and the place was lovely and peaceful. We had booked a room at El Quijote (550 pesos per night) but couldn’t check in till 12pm, so we dropped off our packs, now only 5 hours to wait !! We found somewhere to have breakfast and both ordered Americano breakfasts. We then went exploring, admiring the lovely colonial buildings and vibrant colours. Luckily for us, Fiesta Guelaguetza was in full flow so there was a fantastic ... read more

We arrived at our hostel and dumped our stuff, freshened up and headed out into town to explore. Instantly I felt more relaxed - the place had a slower feel to it an was nowhere near as chaotic! the main square was full of tarps and tents and people laid out which we later found out was because the elections are due soon and the teachers are on strike - some real political activism it was quite a nice change to the apathy we have in the UK around election time! We had some great food at a little vegetarian place - by vegetarian I mean we had chicken soup, steak and generally nothing vegetarian at all! The waiter was excellent (and not Indian like Sarah seems to think) who, when we asked for the set ... read more

Belize was nothing like I imagined it will be.........I LOVED it and stayed more days than planned. On my second day, I met Barry who introduced me to some wonderful people. Together we had fun in Belize, we had lunch in a house in the middle of the sea (the house has a swimming pool right in the middle of the sea -amazing, right?), the boys cooked and Kelly made the best pina coladas ever. The next day we visited San Pedro (that Island Madonna sang about - la Isla Bonita) with Barry as our guide. I rode with Kelly & Pam (2 of the wonderful people Barry introduced me to) in a rented car to San Ignacio, we went to the market on the Guatemala side of the border and drove to Hopkins. While there, ... read more

After a 6hour night bus, executive stlye means you get tthe seat right back which was almost comfortable, got to the hostel waaay to early to check in so had to wait around for hours which was pritty annoying it was just wasting the day and when i eventually got a bed i fell asleep and woke up the next day to a chorous of snoring. the first day was just getting my bearings really and heading down to the zocalo which was pritty cool walking down the cobbled streets which really were not meant for cars seeing the newly painted pastle couloured buildings but stray ofcourse and you see the decrepid ones in a state of disrepair full of graffiti which kinda adds to the charm i guess. the first sight on my personal little walking ... read more

Oaxaca We spent 5 days in Oaxaca city, capital of Oaxaca state in Mexico. It´s a beautiful colonial town with some really great views of the surrounding mountains. We spent a few days in the city itself, looking at museums and eating at the great selection of vegetarian friendly cafes! (Many of which had a chicken option but we´ll overlook that!) One day went to visit Monte Alban, one of the most important archeological sites in this region. It´s built on a hill and is pretty spectacular. It was built around 2000 years ago and had lots of pyramids and excavated tombs. We had an interesting taxi ride up the hill with a driver who spent the whole time gossiping on the phone and not paying much attention to the VERY windy road!! We splashed out ... read more

... read more
