We set off early to Oaxaca and it is a very long drive as we set off at 8 and were not expected to get there until around 6ish and that is if the traffic is okay. Well the traffic leaving Puebla at the beginning is a nightmare and if anyone ever tells you oh the M5 or M25 is a nightmare you tell them Paula said if you want to know what nightmare traffic is try leaving Puebla on a school day.
We have a couple of toilet breaks and then a lunch break. At lunch I decide I need to try to eat something solid but nothing too spicy at the moment - this is totally unlike me going for safe options and if honest I am feeling a bit of a wimp but I know I still have a few hours to go before we eventually arrive at Oaxaca.
After lunch we veer off to a project that is run by G Adventures, the company we booked this part of our Mexico trip with, and it is a local company that make and paint Alebrijes. Alebrijes were original created by a Mexican artisan named Pedro Linares
who was not for making pirates and carnival masks. After falling ill and hallucinating crazy figures and creatures inside his mind, Pedro decided to bring these figures to life which are now know as Alebrijes. The local company zooologico Magico now produce these in wood from start to finish and all made by the family. They are absolutely amazing. We are given a go at painting little ones and all I can say is, don’t give up the day job - oh I have - so instead of don’t give up the day job, don’t think you will be an artist as this is never going to happen. I wish I had taken a photo of the 3 we purchased but they have wrapped them so well there is no way I am going to open them to take a photo - so apologies.
We eventually make our way to the hotel and the heavens opened just as we were nearing the hotel and if I say the heavens opened I MEAN the heavens opened and all I could think of was how the hell are we going to get from the minibus to the hotel with our rucksacks
How fab
Just what you expect in Mexico without getting soaked as our rucksacks are not waterproof like a suitcase - but we were lucky and the rain stopped and we got in. The hotel is okay once again. If totally honest all the hotels on this trip have been okay.
We all meet up to go out to dinner and we are lucky they have a street carnival/parade going on which was an added bonus and, on first impressions, I am really going to like Oaxaca. We have a meal and I decide to have a salad but unfortunately for me it was a hot salad which really I did not want anything fancy and could not eat it. I always feel bad not eating much as it looks bad for the chef - normally I give my food when its like this to Mike but as he hates a salad I had to explain that it was not that I did not like, it the food it was just I was not feeling brilliant.
On the way back to the hotel there is a plaza and everyone was having a dance lesson, it was exactly what you would expect in Mexico - I am
going to like Oaxaca I can see that.
