Our next day trip was to El Museo de las Tortugas/Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga in Mazunte. The turtle industry was banned in 1990. With the help of government action and community cooperation this former turtle processing factory has been converted into a center for the recovery of Oaxaca's Pacific Sea Turtles. All seven of Mexico's marine turtle species are represented here at the center. This was one of the highlights of the trip, especially for Carlos because of his love of turtles. Carlos has his own turtle here in Mexico. Her name is Cucalaloca and she just got a bigger home today. The center has tremendously helped the Sea Turtle population on the Oaxacan Coast. There were so many problems in the past with turtle poachers that now the since the government has stepped ... read more

We have been traveling around the state of Oaxaca for the last 3 weeks. We were in Oaxaca city for the first week, then we went into the mountains to stay in a village called Conulalpam. After that we came back to the city for a couple days before taking off for the coast of Oaxaca, to a beach town called Mazunte. At this moment I am back in San Cristobal, in Tierra Adentro in fact (where the zapatista encuentro was). I arrived today by bus and unpacked my things in my old host family's house. Now begins the Independent Study Project - a one-month period where each student studies a specific topic/organization related to Grassroots Development and Social change. We'll be doing interviews, observation, and reading - but the main idea is to learn ... read more

After enough lazy days and starting to look like a cheesy Italian with my tan and sunkissed messy mullet, I booked onto a boat tour, promising a world of waterlife creatures which I couldn´t help but be sceptical about. However within 5 mins we spotted our first pod of dolphins and within 6 mins I had dived in and with a mask on was swimming around with the dolphin. With their own flippers they were a bit faster than me in the water but it was so cool to see them. The boat man also caught us a turtle to play with which I got to hold for a bit. We also saw a really strange phenomenon which was mantarays leaping out of the water and bellyflopping back in. Completely mad, difficult to make out from ... read more

It´s a very fine line between being friendly and finding you have a date here. By lunch time I had three offers, the first a jewellery seller on the beach wanting to take me to another beach, the next wanted to catch fish for my lunch and be my mexican lover, the third wanted to be my translate the meaning of Time & Leisure and meet me at a bar to tell me the answer. The beach has restaurants and places to stay in various hut shaped buildings along it and some horrific toilets, no flush just buckets. I´ve made a few friends up and down the beach, there´s no other English except one other girl who also happens to be called Lucy. My room is on the beach with a view of the volleyball and ... read more

After a lazy morning and finally working out Skype it was great to chat to Steve. I had a spot of lunch on the beach and headed of to the bus stop. On the bus I had that great feeling of being on my own and travelling into the unknown. The scenery was stunning and I couldn´t help but sketch a few of the Mexicans, desgraciadiamente i could only do the backs and i realised I would really like to draw a few mexican people properly. Not being dropped off at Mazunte but San Antonio where there was no connecting bus and I suddenly wished I had worn shorts instead of a mini-skirt but the taxi driver seemed to enjoy it but I was relieved to arrive in Mantzunte where I headed to the beach in ... read more

Yesterday, I was sitting at a Cantina of sorts, eating lunch and about 300-400 yards out in the bay- a pod of WHALES! I saw about a dozen or more blowing air, and a few jumping and playing, and even a few tails... A guy who runs boat tours was just about wetting himself getting people into the boat to speed out there and desterb their breathing and playing.... beautiful to watch as I ate my lunch.... Beach time has been wonerful- Im sleeping in a hammock every night on this bug balcony filled with other hammocks... its wonderful how close to the ocean I sleep- the only down-side: I get woken up every morning at sunrise because the sun beams right into my face! By about 7:30am its up behind the roof, so no worries! ... read more

The past week, Dad and I have been staying at a paradise beach called Playa Faro de Bucerias (Diver's Lighthouse). It is in the state of Michoacan and famous for being isolated from the rest of Mexico until twenty years ago. Supposedly there were bandits who roamed the hills but not anymore. This beach is perfect for a quiet relaxing stay, if you enjoy camping. Dad and I set up the tent under a palapa in the midst of a few VW hippie vans. I caught a fish and filleted it for one of our meals. The most interesting part of our stay was the fellow campers. We had a mix of characters that surpassed Alice in Wonderland. We got to know a few French Canadians, Americans and Mexican travelers. Oscar, the Mexican, let me ... read more

Mazunte was a very relaxing place, within a couple of days I’d made a couple of local friends and met a nice Swiss girl called Andrea. She gave me good tips for San Cristobal in Chiapas state. I also found a much cheaper place to stay run by Juanita and her lovely family who seemed as fascinated with me as I was with the place. Have to say though on the first night in my cheap and cheerful room the mosquitoes feasted like it was thanks giving. Boy they got my arse, literally. Those of you who know how I feel about mosquitoes love of my blood will know I wasn’t best pleased about getting 10 bites on my bum. Yes 10 bites, I was well vexed. I mean to say, did they have to call ... read more

On sunday, we caught a mini bus (very similar to the A-Team van ) and had the scariest roller coaster ride of our lives for 5 hours through the mountains down to the beach. When I had my eyes closed ( which was most of the journey) I was convinced it was B.A. himself driving but, every so often, when I could bare to open my eyes without wanting to vomit, I would catch a glimpse of this wee manic mexican man singing and crossing himself everytime he over took another vehicle. The alternative was a 12 hour first class bus journey that doesn't use the same route - which, in hindsight... well I like to think I would have still gone the A Team route, I secretly enjoyed being a soldier of fortune and on ... read more
