Our last full day by the beach so needless to say it was another busy one - splashing about in the waves and eating and drinking. The cafes and restaurants here are not the cheapest in Mexico (though cheaper than we've been used to on our trip so far) but the standard of food is surprisingly high given the out-of-the-way location. The logic seems to be that the typical customer here is more likely to be influenced by nicer meals than by lower prices - there are quite a few Americans here after all - and we were extremely satisfied with the result. Recommendations: 'Choco Banana' for breakfast or lunch, 'Hot Chilli' for dinner. The latter place earned extra points by welcoming us tonight with "yey, my honeymooners are back". Sayulita's beach really would score ... read more

A similar day to yesterday. Today's chores included a trip to the internet café. Here we heard the bad news - Man City lost 3-nil at Chelsea in their opening game of the new season. Another storm was brewing which we watched from the edge of the sea. It seemed to have had a positive effect on the waves and the surfers were out en masse. All very impressive, although it's bound to be far easier than it looks. Ed amused Gemma by successfully playing chicken with 6ft breaking waves, earning the soubriquet "faster than a cheetah driving a bullet train" from the admiring beach-bums (... poetic licence strikes again). The storm also had an effect on the wildlife and a substantial part of the evening was spent coaxing a crab out of our open-fronted ... read more

The one thing our bungalow doesn't have is with hindsight probably also the most important - air-conditioning. The temperature barely dropped at all during the night and we had a thoroughly miserable night's sleep. The bungalow is like a studio, and with non-stop wall on 3 sides there was no breeze passing through; we might as well have slept in an oven. So there was only 1 thing for it - a very short walk to a couple of sunbeds, under the shade of an umbrella and about 10ft from the ocean (a relatively steep beach here so high and low tide are very close). That was more or less it. A lot of swimming and just sitting by the sea reading. ... read more

His name is Jesus but the tacos are definately not fom heaven. I am still paying for the habanero salsa I heaped on in drunken delight... It's been a busy couple of weeks "waiting" for Brady and Mel. (Happy last day of work kids - we'll see you next week!) Sayulita has turned out to be the perfect place to spend a month. The surf has been small but clean - we are usually in the water 2 or 3 times a day to escape the heat. Jesse and I have both gotten some great rides although it can get a little dangerous. One wave I rode in to the beach and it doubled up and slammed my board into the sand. It ended up breaking the nose off my board and cost me $25 to ... read more

Hola, Por fin llegamos a Mexico! Well, jesse and I have arrived - we are patiently waiting for Chris and Melanie here in Sayulita (the beers, surf and suntans make it bearable). Its a great little surf town although a little overrun with gringos (ourselves excluded of course). Anyway - its a perfect place to pass the month - Brady & mel expect to catch up with us in early June and then the viaje begins. Our loose plan is to head slowly south into the yucatan, then every country between there and Panama... After that ... we'll see... So far the truck and camper have been problem free - I am writing this in the camper now with the fan on and windows open - its maybe 28 degrees C in here... outside its at ... read more

I started the blog long after leaving Mexico but want to add my memories and pictures from there as well to complete the sabbatical story. Ahhhh... everyone raved about Sayulita. Well Annie and Bob had loved it. Something drew me there- it seemed the perfect place to start my travels. I wasn't afraid to go alone for one. The friendliness of the place was immediately confirmed- I met a hippy-ish couple during my first meal. Delicious seafood, folks from the Bay Area or Canada were typical new acquaintances. Since I came to surf, I checked out Patty & Patricio's surf school within the first day or two of my arrival (discovered from other locals only after 2 lessons with Patricio that he was the long-board champion of Mexico!). Most days found me too intimidated by the ... read more
