Howdy, After getting bored of the typical colonial towns we were visiting, which we loved but wanted a change, we decided to head to a ranch. We found one which was about 3 hours south of Guadalajara. We had to get back from Tequila first and then work out how to get a bus to Los Sauces where Hacienda de Taos was. We were a little concerned as Los Sauces is so small it is not even on google maps and the ranch owner Celina was to pick us up from where the bus stopped. We got on a bus that headed towards Mazamitla relying on the bus driver to let us know when we were at Los Sauces. Celina had mentioned we would be dropped off in front of a small shop owned by her ... read more

I'm writing this sitting on our large balcony, in the warm late afternoon sun... We had breakfast at a very old restaurant this morning because almost all the restaurants are closed today...it was OK, but Bill was served a mug of hot milk and a jar of Nescafe when he ordered coffee! We checked on bus times for tomorrow, which was hard because the bus leaves from a stop, not the bus terminal. The ticket booth was closed but the woman who sells tacos nearby told us there was a bus at 11:40 am...hope there is! We took a taxi from the plaza to the entrance of a gated community, where we had to pay to enter, and then walk 2.5 km to the waterfall, El Salta. In the taxi we passed people on horseback, and ... read more

Our lovely host at Quinta del Sol, Eleanor, drove us to Jocotepic today to catch the bus to Mazamitla. We only had a 10 minute wait along the highway for the bus to Mazamitla. We shared the bus stop with a nearly toothless old man who was delighted to speak with us...and the man running the tire stand next to the bus stop. The bus circled the far side of Lake Chapala and then turned south and started up the mountains. Oaks changed to pines...and the bus began to falter. We were going about 10 miles/hour. The driver pulled into a gas station, and dumped two big buckets of water into the radiator (I assume) and we made it into town. Mazamitla is promoted as the Switzerland of Mexico. It is also on the list of ... read more

We spent several days at the agua caliente (hot springs resort) Villa Corona. Since we wrote about and posted pictures from there last year, I won't go into any detail about the place except to describe the town's only sit-down restaurant. I don't recall the name of the restaurant but it is just across the street from the Pemex (gas) station. We had dinner there with Paul and Terry. The menu offered rabbit but I didn't think much about it. Paul and Terry ordered fish, Ray ordered chicken and I had shrimp. While waiting for our food to arrive Terry struck up a conversation with the restaurant owners. They showed her around the property. She came back for me. There were several pens of bunnies whom I'm sure will soon be slaughtered and served. Terry and ... read more

Another Saturday and another opportunity to travel. School has been busy and the weekends seem more appealing as an opportunity to laze about and relax rather than hop on another bus. Still, now I have visited Mexico City and Morelia there seems to be less urgency to travel and I am looking forward to just enjoying the end of the term and spending some time at home before leaving. I did however set off for Mazamitla today as the zip wiring was still on my Mexican to do list. I walked to the bus station and inquired about the next bus. The man working there was eager to tell me that he speaks a little English and on learning I was from England exclaimed how far it is and asked if I had family in Mexico. ... read more
