So I haven't updated in awhile....sorry for being a slacker! So...there's been this huge 25 things about me trend on facebook. I'm supposed to write 25 things about me, but I think I'll just use this opportunity to update you all. 1. I am loving Mexico. The food, the houses, the buildings, the streets, the weather, the people, and of course all the puppies. 2. Yesterday I went to San Miguel de Allende and these AWESOME hot springs....I SWAM IN HOT SPRINGS OUTSIDE IN FEB. I seriously love my life sometimes. 3. I didn't like San Miguel de Allende as much as Ciudad Guanajuato. Too many Ex-piats and less cool. I love where I live. 4. MY 21st birthday is tomorrow...and I'm going on a bar crawl with some friends...in MEXICO. 5.The thing I least like ... read more

Even though it is still chilly here in the mornings and at night...Spring is here in Mexico. Every year at this time, San Miguel celebrates with the Feria de Candelaria. It means "Candle Mass," or the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and is also for the Virgin of Candelaria. The main park in the city, Parque Juarez, becomes filled with plant and flower vendors from all over Mexico. They fill the park with gorgeous blooms in every bright color you could desire. The basketball court is filled with macetas, or flower pots, from teeny-tiny to HUGE! Aztec dancers welcome the spring with drums while children giggle and play with wheel barrels, hoping to help you to your car or taxi for a tip. I have been wanting plants for our place very ... read more

Our first week here in town came and went like a good tequila. Aside from shopping here and there for various apartment items, we ended up walking to a lot of events we would have otherwise shrugged off. First off, I joined up doing belly dancing again. I did Tribal belly dancing for a short time in college. I saw that there was a dance studio only one block from our place. When I checked out the schedule, I was surprised to see that Tribal belly dancing was taught there twice a week. When I emailed the instructor, she was thrilled to find out that I some experience or even heard of Tribal style. (Tribal belly dancing involves a group of women that follow a leader in an improv. style, where each woman takes turns being ... read more

So this past week has been crazy! I can't believe it's been a week since I've been here. My Spanish is getting a little better and I'm getting way more accustomed to life here. The best part of this experience is submerging yourself into another culture, and seeing how other parts of the world exist. With human civilization comes life, and all the life has in store for us. There is never a better or worse culture, just a different culture. This last week alone has been an amazing time for me to think and reflect on my life and a little bit on Mexican life. Enjoy the pictures and please share your thoughts! Life Life here is so much different then the US, but it reminds me a little bit of Thailand. The street vendors, ... read more

It has been a long time since I last published on this blog and I am sorry about that. BUT! With this long break, we have some exciting news: we have a new casita. Let’s back track a little bit. Last week, our great friend Dianne invited us to stay in Casa Luna. One night turned into three turned to one week. Our week in Centro was fantastic. We went to our studio to work during the day, sat on the roof of Casa Luna with beer and guacamole in the afternoons and ate at great restaurants in the evening. We soon started to realize, that we wanted more and more to be in Centro full-time. One night’s dinner at a wonderful Indian restaurant, we shared our feelings with our good friends Macky and Aissa. They ... read more

The first days in Guanajuato. Just writing this is a bit mind-boggling as I keep having to remind myself that Spanish is not required. As I expected, the Spanish aspect of the trip has been, and will continue to be, a challenge. However, I do think that my comprehension is already improving - perhaps because my host family refuses to speak to me in English, they simply babble on in Spanish until I understand, or at least pretend , to understand. Everywhere you look someone is selling something. I am amazed at the number of hole-in-the-wall stores and restaurants (I’m not sure if they really qualify as restaurants) in the city. Within one block you can find over 10 ‘stores’ selling what seems to me the very same items. I guess the owners have very little ... read more

Hola everyone! Well...I'm finally in Guanajuato, Mexico and I absolutely love it so far. I think it is one of the most beautiful cities that I have ever been too. I got on my plane in O'hare airport yesterday morning and flew into Houston, Texas, from there flew to Leon, Mexico and took a bus ride with other students from my program and met my familia. I almost missed my connecting flight to Leon! That airport is pretty big. The plane to Leon was kinda creepy, I'm not going to lie. It was very skinny, small and shaky, but everything was fine. When the plane landed in Leon, I felt so odd. I seriously felt like I just flew into summer. My body was so confused! Going from negative wind chill factors to the 70's is ... read more

Day 10 is a travel day, we couldn´t go directly to Guanajuato from Morelia, we had to go to Irapuato first then catch a bus to Guanajuato. We debused in Irapuato, walked into the terminal, bought 2 tickets for Guanajuato, walked back out, got on our bus and left. We weren´t there 5 mins. Old Guanajuato is built in the crevis of a mountain. In order to maintain the beauty of the city, tunnels were drilled through the mountain and under the existing city to accomadate the flow of traffic. Therefore Guanajuato is a unique town looking somewhat like swiss cheese. Guanajuato´s steep cobble stone streets are soft north american bodies. Next time Tony Little wants to invent a glut machine he should consult the residence of Guanajuato for some design inspiration. We ate dinner late ... read more

As always, the whirlwind of holidays have come and gone. The Jardin has been decorated and the flickering Christmas lights are still around the little houses in our colonia. I always dread having to take down the Christmas tree...but it is that time. I think the most amazing thing we saw this holiday was at our little gordita restaurant down the street. We went for breakfast one morning and enjoyed our usual egg and picadillo gorditas and Cafe de Olla. We have become pretty good friends with the family that runs this little business and so while we were eating, the "Papa," said once we were finished, to come into the house. He wanted to show us something. Once we had finished, he escorted us into the sala where a huge nativity scene was set up. ... read more

Hola Well, I only have a few days left here in Mexico, as I head home on Friday. The time has gone by oh so quickly... The last couple weeks, I've just been relaxing and enjoying my time here, and spending lots of time with the family. Two weeks ago we had a Thanksgiving dinner for the ISA students and their families. The food was great but it just wasn't the same. But it was nice to at least celebrate the holiday. That weekend I had to say goodbye to a lot of my friends, who were leaving to travel before heading home. It was really hard to say goodbye to these people that I have spent the whole semester with, realizing that I probably won't see most of them ever again. That weekend Jesús and ... read more
