Hola everyone, I don't know about all of you - but October seems like a blur to me - I honestly don't know where the time went. I now only have less than 2 months here - which is unbelievable. I was talking to a friend for a while today, and we both have very mixed emotions about leaving, but in general don't really want to think about that. It's just scary because I know that the second half will probably go by even faster. I know that part of me will be ready to go home, but it will be extremely difficult to say goodbye to my life here. Anyways...the festival here in Guanajuato ended on Sunday. I guess I didn't really notice that it was even here too many times - just because I ... read more

Oh, there are few things more exciting than to wake up somewhere you've never been before! From the songs of birds before sunrise (accompanied by the explosion of fire-works at 5 AM!) to getting lost on winding streets full of exotic smells and colorful sights. The Cervantino is not over until tonight, so the city is flooded with a wild assortment of folk, much like Mardi-Gras in Venice. Live music on every other corner till the wee hours. Life unbridled. An intimate and welcoming place, already feeling like home in less than 24 hours. ... read more

After Guanajuato I traveled to Celaya to visit family from my dad's side. Last time I saw them was over three years ago, but before that it was probably around twenty years ago. I was excited to see them as they were to see me. They call me "Ale" here, no "x". They made me feel extremely welcome. They fed me A LOT! I'm sure some of you have experienced that when visiting relatives you haven't seen in a while. They make all sorts of food and make sure you're full and happy. I probably gained about ten good solid pounds. I have to admit, the attention and love they were giving me was awesome! I felt the love. The second day I was here, me and my Tia Chole (Aunt Chole) went off to visit ... read more

I hated to leave Guanajuato. I had such a great time here. I planned on staying here for about 4 days, but ended up extending it to 6 days....and I still had a hard time leaving. I've been here before when visiting family in Celaya, but I never stayed for more than a day. To begin, when I arrived at my hostel I immediately met some language students. They were from Australia, Germany, and Holland. The owner of the hostel also has a language school, so the hostel is also used to accommodate foreign students. First there was Samara, an Indian-born Australian. She looks Indian, but has an Australian accent. She was extremely friendly and pretty funny as well. Then there was Julia and Jenni, two German friends who are traveling together. Jenni was crazy fun ... read more

Arriving slap bang in the middle of Mexico's biggest International Music and Arts Festival, the Cervantino had it's good and bad points. The good being the abundance of street theatre, free musical concerts and abundance of food stalls, the bad being the huge amount of people crammed into the small streets and the massive hike in hostel prices. The city of Guanajuato is wedged into a steep ravine, a jumble of colourful houses almost perched on top of each other. The strict planning laws have kept an authentic colonial feel about the place. Traffic lights, and neon signs have been banned and there are a series of unique subterranean streets. A passage was once carved out to divert the river under the city. They have since piped the river off even lower and the tunnels are ... read more

Before we moved to Mexico, there were several fiestas that I was particularly looking forward to experiencing...one of them being the celebration for Archangel Michael, that rad angel that lead the army of angels against Lucifer. Michael is always seen here wearing armor with a helmet, holding a sword and usually stepping on the devil's face. San Miguel de Allende is named after this protector and so when the day comes to honor him, it is not only to celebrate the angel, but to celebrate the town itself. Ronnie and I had been looking forward to this event for weeks. Finally, in the local newspaper, the schedule of festivities had been released. So dancers start at 6:00pm, okay good, we can get dinner afterwards and music starts at 8:00pm. 10:00pm- the larger than life puppets enter ... read more

Since Ronnie is much braver than I, he went to a bullfight and I did not. Since I think this is such a neat cultural experience, I am handing this blog over to Ronnie to write for this entry. Enjoy! -JB "Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter’s honor." - Ernest Hemingway A guest blog entry by Ronnie: “It’s so cruel.” “Oh disgusting” “The poor animal.” Inevitably I would receive a response like this when I mentioned that I wanted to see a bullfight while in Mexico. Are those things true? Probably, but I wanted to see one anyway. A little known fact (or at least not known by me until recently) is that ... read more

Hola everyone! Well another week has gone by and it has definitely had it's ups and downs. Last week's classes went by really fast - and I didn't really do anything out of the ordinary. I had a lot of homework, mostly because my Literature professor told us 2 weeks ago that we had 2 weeks to finish our novels - when we all thought we had the entire semester. Thankfully I had read about half of it - but that meant I still had about 125 pages left. I read "Como Agua Para Chocolate" - or "Like Water for Chocolate" - and it was a great book! I felt really proud of myself for reading an entire 250 page novel all in Spanish. I really didn't struggle too much and I learned a lot of ... read more

Both Ronnie and I have been wanting to learn more about Mexican cuisine while we are here, especially all those different chiles! Luckily, my mom and step-dad Mitch were also very interested in taking a class....luckier still was that Dianne was offering a class out at her rancho with the amazing chef Kirsten West! (She worked with Dianne Kennedy, Rick Bayless for years and was Mick Jagger's personal chef for four years! He is very nice and down to earth she says) We drove out the the beautiful rancho with 2 other couples. Still, every time Ronnie and I go there, we are just breathless. We never want to leave! Once class was about to start, we all sat down with our hibiscus flower coolers and began to take notes on how to make (I swear) ... read more

Hola! Time is still flying by - I can't believe it's been almost 2 weeks since my last entry - and I have done a lot since then! Two weekends ago was my long weekend, as I had Monday and Tuesday off from school for Independence Day. That Saturday I went to a nearby city called San Miguel de Allende. It's smaller than Guanajuato so there wasn't a whole lot to do. We walked around, ate some amazing Mexican food called gorditas - which are really thick tortillas stuffed with meat of some sort. (Most of the time I'm not quite sure exactly what I'm eating...) We also ate some amazing ice cream. Here in Mexico I have eaten some of the best ice cream I have ever had in my entire life. And that was ... read more
