Colima (city of the Palms) where the volcano resides active for several centuries fusing at its own discretion as early as March of 2015. Original settlers have been note from the early 1500 BC with many artifacts for history of a large population. When Cortez arrived in Mexico he destroyed 93% of this states population before San Miguel was able to release the slaves and free mexico of the Spanish. April of 1941 the state was again destroyed by an earthquake. It is now rebuilt with a population of 130,000 but is not a main tourist attraction as it has very little old or heritage sites left. The picture posted of the Volcano is a recent explosion, the next taken today from as close as they would allow us which was several miles away.... read more

We had a pleasant taxi ride to Manzanillo from Cuyutlan...it's very close geographically, but there is no direct road along the coast. You have go south, inland and then north again. Our hotel is full of Canadians, which is no surprise...they've locked up this area! The beach is white sand, and the water quite calm...no undertow, so you can swim as far as you like. But when I ran on the beach this am, there was a wide band of trash at the hightide line and more in the water. However, I didn't see any body parts, medical waste, or poop, so I decided I would still go swimming this afternoon. Surprisingly, the beach was almost completely clean, and the water clear too! We are right on the entrance to Mexico's biggest port, and there is ... read more

We are leaving here today, and have really enjoyed our stay here. When we arrived, the bombed out look of the outskirts of town, the disrepair of the hotel, and the shacks (seafood stands) crowding the beach made us think we'd made a mistake... But the quiet charm of the place quickly grew on us, and it was great fun being in the middle of Mexican weekenders....lots of families, no bad behavior (including the quietest Harley guys we've ever not heard...). We spent all of Sunday under the umbrellas on the beach, having things brought to us (freshly made tapioca pudding, beers, guacamole, hats, jewelry, hammocks, pistachios) but no pushy vendors... Lots of playing the surf, watching the life guards rescue guys who went past the breakers, and card playing. The Mexican families rented small swimming ... read more

We've decide to stay here longer, since we're getting into the rhythm of days here: a run on the beach, breakfast and on-line time (since it takes an hour to get breakfast here), some sort of sightseeing, swimming, beers and quesadillas on the beach, more swimming, showers, card playing on the patio, nap, and dinner... Today we visited the Salt Museum (no one there, not even running the gift shop, but everything open...) and took a boat tour of the estuary by the turtle center. Since the walk back yesterday was not one we wanted to repeat, we had planned to take a taxi there, and get the driver's phone number so we could call from the turtle center when we wanted to return. However, we couldn't find a taxi. I asked a collective driver whose ... read more

Wednesday was a travel day...bus from Mazamitla to Colima...bus from Colima to Tecoman, bus from Tecoman to Armaria, taxi from Armeria to our hotel in Cuyutlan....about 6 hours altogether. We rode through the mountains, into lush valleys, and back up into the mountains. Outside of Colima, we began to descend to the ocean, and caught sight of the active Colima volcano. Unfortunately, the top was hidden by clouds... We passed through miles of coco palm plantations, and arrived in this small, somewhat deserted beach town, Cuyutlan. Many of the buildings look abandoned or at least closed up. Our hotel reopened under new management only three weeks ago, and is trying hard...it is nearly full it seems, perhaps because there are few other options on the beach. This hotel is on the malecon (beach promenade) and beyond ... read more

Today  February 1, 2011 We are back on the road again -- left San Miguel this morning and we are following a beautiful winding road through the hills and mountains as we head back toward the Pacific coast. This morning we started in arid rocky brown and tan country, then drove through fertile farmland with cattle and irrigated fields of vegetables, small towns with markets (and the ubiquitous ornate churches), and then over the mountains to the other side where there is a lush landscape with pine trees, palms, thriving grass,-- all green Green GREEN! Mostly Tarjei drives which works well -- he's a very good driver, confident and fast but also careful.  I am an excellent passenger -- relaxed, happy, helping with navigation (when our Spanish-speaking GPS lady "Norma" confuses us). I also enjoy napping ... read more

Mexicans defineatly have figured out the party situations, while I feel having grown up with the taste of beer in my mouth they defineatly have rhythm in their blood. Apart from much tastier things to drink than beer, I just say ponche and agua loca (drink of the devil if you ask me). I was introduced to banda, the mexican folclore. Asking how to dance to it I was told you just have to feel it. Yeah right, me feeling latino music. A glass of agua loca changed this, or at least I didnt care anymore and so we danced away through the night. Wherever you go you hear banda or some kind of mexican music, non of that gringo shit. At the moment the favs are shakiras loca loca loca and we no talk americano... ... read more

Today I just feel it, I dont know what it is maybe the lack of sleep (5 hours versus 12 hours yesterday which turned out to be a total shit day). Mexicans say you have to feel it, to be able to dance, to be able to enjoy the food. I am slowliy getting it, what they dont feel is the difference between a "b" and a "v". Ask them if they hear a difference between "vivo" and "bibo" they will look at you as if something was wrong with you. There is no difference they say... it is hilarious. So today, I feel it. I am alive and I love it. I dont care that I look like taki fuego, that I sweat waterfalls, that I take pictures of everything remotely interesting and that I ... read more

I have been in Colima for almost 2 weeks now. Why you will ask, you have probably never known that this town even existed (it is about a three hour bus drive west of Guadalajara) and very well off any kind of tourist track. I think I havent seen any tourist since I arrived here. So it is not very surprising that everyone stares at the tall red-skinned dude. "Are you always so red" is probablyt the question I have heard to most. Hell yes, I am white dude (not a gringo!) that gets too much sun, call me Taki fuego por favor, just like the very hot chips :). Orginially I thought about going to Oaxaca to learn spanish for a week but instead I stayed here, my good friend Lee is teaching me and ... read more
