Huehuetenango sounds like an Abba song. It is a town in western Guatemala. I arrive after three days of crawling up and down a rugged mountain range known as the Sierra de Los Cuchumaines. This was the end of another beautiful ride. Late afternoon I have finished the main climb and am just coasting down a valley to the town of Copan Ruinas hoping that my new riding top will get me into the reformed Take That when I return to the UK.

In Guatemala I avoided Guatemala City and Antigua and rode through the hill to Mexico. Had been thinking about going north into the jungle and going to the ruins at Tikal but changed my mind at the last moment (read that it might be difficult to get a Tourist Card for Mexico at the jungle river crossings).

Met US missionary, Steve, Nebraskan ranchers Robert and Rex and Cesar and his wife and Ben at a really nice little hostel, Los Ranchitos, near the entrance of the Quetzal Biotope nature reserve in Guatemala.

It took me 3 days to ride the 160 km from Coban to Hueheutenango. Most of the road is newly paved but the gradients are the steepest I have ridden so far on my trip.

The market price of a pineapple is being fiercely debated by these three ladies who are adamant that it should be 3.5 Quetzals and quite scornful of suggestions that it should be anything else. I have a long climb ahead and am quite happy to pay 5 straightaway without entering into any similar negotiations with the pineapple saleman.
