The market price of a pineapple is being fiercely debated by these three ladies who are adamant that it should be 3.5 Quetzals and quite scornful of suggestions that it should be anything else. I have a long climb ahead and am quite happy to pay 5 straightaway without entering into any similar negotiations with the pineapple saleman.

Huehuetenango sounds like an Abba song. It is a town in western Guatemala. I arrive after three days of crawling up and down a rugged mountain range known as the Sierra de Los Cuchumaines.
