I'm finding it hard to know where to start when looking back at our time in the US. I'm writing this from Mexicali, Mexico, having crossed the border in a friendly exchange of poor Spanish (mine) and poor English (the border guard) and the usual form filling and stamping. Being about an hour and a half away from the California border, America has clearly made its mark on this part of Mexico yet simultaneously, 'we're a long way from home, Toto'. Dorothy's words to her trusty companion rang true to me at a number of points in the US. It's probably helpful to say I never wanted to go to America. I had the rather arrogant but common view that it took the worst bits of English culture and made it louder, brighter and bigger and ... read more

I woke up at 0430; the taxi was picking me up at 0500. I got to the airport at 0520, up to this point everything was going perfect, too perfect. I waited in line to check in and the agent told me she can actually put me on a direct flight to Mexico City instead of having a layover in Atlanta. So I said why not, the less layover the better, right? WRONG! Oh boy was I ever wrong... She told me it was Air Canada that had the flight scheduled, so I proceeded in waiting again in line at the Air Canada check-in. After 15 minutes of waiting, the agent told me my name wasn't in the system yet, and that it usually can take up to 10 minutes. So I took a seat, played ... read more

March 23-28, 2009. Participated in the Alternative Spring Break 2009 with SJSU students and staff for one week in Mexicali, Mexico to join the local communities in developing their schools, farms, and bee hives! DAY 1: We flew down to SD from SJC then were picked up from the friendly Los Ninos volunteers, David and Chloe. We loaded our luggage in a white pick up and packed ourselves into a 13 passenger van. The trip from SD to the Calexico-Mexicali border took about 2.5 hours. Crossing the border was very quick. I was unimpressed by the event because I had imagined there would be more people trying to get through, thus creating a longer wait time. However, we drove through without even stopping. The first night, we relaxed and were introduced to Alonzo who is a ... read more

Mexicali, 08-10-2002, nighttime. Easy and relaxed cycling today after a good night's rest in La Rumerosa which was mostly a truckstop village with a small comedor, an open air garage, old caravans, rusty mobile homes and a small hotel where I was the only customer. Lots of trucks parked at the side of the road but I presume the drivers to have spent the night inside the cabins of their trucks instead of cashing out on these dingy little rooms the hotel offered at a hefty twenty american green backs. The last thirty kilometers where downhill through a beautiful landscape, the sort of light brown colored granite boulders strangely shaped and thrown around by a goliath, I remember from five years ago when I cycled down the Baja to Cabo San Luca. Hotel Nuevo Pascifica is ... read more

La Rumerosa, 07-10-2002. The sand track I'm on goes up and down hills of avarage heights. I've to push my bike since cycling is out of the question due to the enormous amount of small rocks and stones that cover the path. I'm surrounded by a sur-realistic landscape, huge weirdly shaped granite boulders are all around me reminding me of my time in Hampi in India. Organ pipe cacti and barrel cacti, strangely formed cirio trees and yucca bushes add to the scene. Road runners do honor to their name and cross the road in front of me, their long legs swiftly moving under their feathery bodies. A flock of black and white pelicans overhead flying in the direction of the coast. Despite the intence heat and the hard work of pushing an overloaded bicycle up ... read more

Parque Nacional Constitucion de 1857, 06-10-2002 just past noon. The dirt road I'm cycling on is climbing up and up in an eastward direction. I can feel my lungs heaving inside my chest, my breath is rasping, my body covered with perspiration while my legs are pumping the pedals of my bike. I'm reaching a plateau full with ponderosa pine trees, birds fly across the road, the hammering sounds of woodpeckers emerge from among the trees. Despite the heavy wood smell of the ponderosa trees my nostrils are slowy detecting the presence of water, Laguna Hanson is near and my goal. The basket on the front of my bike is full with Santa Clara mexican beer, food supplies and and a huge two and a half plastic liter bottle of drinking water I bought all this ... read more
