Alle folk er ... read more

Sorry about so many photos, but hey, they are probably much better than my ramblings anyway...... Monday, 23 August 2010 Spitsbergen Guesthouse, Svalbard Woke ok at 4.30am and even got a bit of leftover bread brekky and was about to have cereal but taxi was early. Got to lift before I realized my wallet and money belt was still under the pillow! Lucky. Was bit over ½ hour to the airport and a long way so worth the $30 odd each we paid I suppose. Joanne tried to check me in online last night and it didn’t work, and when I tried to checkin it didn’t either, the lady had to do it. Then got to leave my luggage 4 hours early which was great - hopefully it won’t go walkabout in the meantime. Then we ... read more

Greenland 4. january - 31/3. 2010 Blog #1 Finally I began again, Travel is my passion and my main addiction, I need to live different places. If not im getting sad and get withdrawals. Travel is self-prescribed anti-depressant. I finished my education 1 year ago - and I could proud call myself male registered nurse! Not that I really care much about gender. But sometimes I think it is an advantage to be a man in a woman work zone. Wonder if it had something to say, when I got this new job so fast. Felt tragic in November 2009. 5 years in Denmark was beyond me - with only small holidays in between. I behaved stupid (self-destructive?) and felt close to mental breakdown. Greenland is a former colony of Denmark- and they still get massive ... read more

Even though I only spent three and a half days in Greenland, I am in love. I arrived at the airport early Monday morning, groggy but excited, only to find out that our 0915 flight to Kangerlussuaq has been delayed six hours. An ominous start to the trip, yes, but I spent that time productively, befriending some classmates and spending the meal vouchers the airport gave us. Long story short, our flight was cancelled to due technical problems with the one plane that Air Greenland owns for flights between Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen. Kangerlussuaq is the largest airport in Greenland, and the only point of entry by air. There is only one flight between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq everyday, and the airport is the only reason Kangerlussuaq exists. The original airstrip was built by the USA, and the ... read more

I just got back from GREENLAND! If i could describe Greenland in a few words, they would be: snowy, cold, and rather barren. The trip was really eventful, starting with day one. I woke up with a really sore throat. Our flight was supposed to depart from Copenhagen at 9:30am on Monday. When all 30 of us arrived at the airport at 7:30 to check in, they told us the flight was to be delayed until 2pm due to mechanical issues with the Air Greenland plane. We were all tired and upset with this information, but we made the best out of the wait, getting to know each other. Unfortunately as 2pm came around, they continued to push the time back further and further. Finally at 4pm they announced that they were canceling the flight. We ... read more

Really enjoyed my day here. Qaqortoq’s population of 3500 is primarily Inuits with some Danes residing here. Judy, Diana and I walked around the small town. We spent quite a bit of time with an Inuit gentleman who makes jewelry from the rocks on the island. Saw lots of children out playing and went to a local grocery store. There were some unique items in the store, but much was the same that you see in the USA. Sat in front of a little café while some drank coffee. Started out to be a very cold day, but as the sun came out, it warmed a little bit. Nice day and nice people on the island. ... read more

Friday 8-8-08 Today we are awakened at 6:30 with a humpback whale sighting. Amanda and I bundle up and trip out into the cold air (38°F, a mere 4°C). On the observation deck, a Scandinavian in shorts and tee-shirt (he does admit that it is cold) points out the sighting. I race down to the bow of the ship, joining Richard the bird-man and the voyage photographer Kevin. There I watched a humpback and a minkie surface, blow air through their blow holes a few times, float about, and then dive once more. According to Richard, this behavior is typical of the humpback, a baleen whale. We also see its fluke print, a bubbling made on the surface when the whale beats its tail underwater. Two icebergs glide by, one on the stern horizon and ... read more
