Geo: 48.8318, -64.4883Gaspé,is situated on a peninsula at the mouth of the St.Lawrence river and means "lands end “. It lies in a large bay at the confluence of the Dartmouth and York rivers and contains the first of Canada's 36 National Parks, the Forillon National Park. It took a 45 minute ride on a yellow school bus to reach the park after which we set off on foot for a short walk along the coastal trail. The town is in Quebec, which is a province of Canada, which has French as its main language. All the signs are in French with no English translation. One of the guides told us that all the government paperwork is in French but people could have the papers in English as long as they applied in writing – in ... read more

Old Quebec City is like walking into a small city in France , although it is very commercialized the history and restoration is amazing. The Wall completely surrounds the old city backed by gun turrets and cannon"s. There are memorials from the first Canadian farmer to the fathers of confederation. Amongst the historical and architectural buildings on the cobblestone streets are bistros, cafes', museums and art galleries and of course the churches. All of this makes Old Quebec a lively and very colourful place to stroll. The parking is very expensive and although we had planned to take a tour in we ended up staying at a camping ground to far out and we drove in. All in all it was a must see and the extra effort was worth it. I will pause here to ... read more

Ste. Anne des Monts to Gaspe Today was very rainy and foggy in the morning. We spent the morning at the Exploramer aquarium in Ste Anne de Monts. We had planned to take their exploring boat ride out into the St. Lawrence but unfortunately the weather was too miserable. The boys did enjoy the aquarium. The had a good playground of ship play structures so despite the rain the boys enjoyed this area. We stopped for lunch in Mont St. Pierre. While eating, the lady told us that the Caplan fish were washing up on the beach with the tide and many people were there gathering them. She thought the boys would enjoy it. By the time we finished lunch she said her boyfriend called to say all the fish on the beach had been gathered, ... read more

Before we left Gaspe in the morning, we visited the site where Jaques Cartier placed his cross after discovering Canada. There are some really beautiful large sculptures depicting his meeting with the First Nations and placing the cross. They looked like large stone tablets but they were actually made of bronze but must have been cast from original wood carvings because the signature on them was from Bourgault, a famous wood carver from St. Jean Port Joli. From there it was on to Perce, but we stopped along the way for the boys to play at the playground at Indian Head Rock rest point. The rest stops in this area are great. They typically have great views of the sea and often really good playgrounds. This one had both. Got to Perce to see the famous ... read more
