Day 5 of my Hike. This time I would have some company of my hike. Lea is an old friend from high school and I knew she would be good at hiking because she ran competitively in University and would be good shape. We met up at Beamer Conservation Area and left her car there and took my car to Quarry Rd Beamsville which would be the start of our hike.
The weather was beautiful and only a bit chilly. We dressed in layers so that we could just lose layers when it got too hot. This section is rated hard to hike but aside from a few hills and muddy sections we made good time. The fact that it was mostly dry made hiking easier. It was lovely views along the way we chatted along the way. It is actually easier to hike with another person because you have someone to talk to and someone else to keep an eye out for route markers which can be missed easily.
Halfway through the hike we left the trail and turned right onto Ridge Rd E. We walked for about a KM on that road until we reconnected with the
Bruce Trail. We passed some wineries along the way including Mike Weir's winery which had a beautiful patio overlooking the vineyards. We would have stopped at the Organized Crime winery but we would have to carry the wine with us to the end of the hike. At one point on the hike we were walking along Ridge Rd E when we heard a loud gunshot. We were not near a gun range and some people at a nearby house were shocked as well so it was not an usual event. We looked around a bit but we couldn't see the source of the gunfire so we continued along our way.
Towards the end of the hike we exited the hiking trail onto Mountain St in Grimsby. We passed over the Forty Creek Bridge at this point and represented the boundary between the Niagara and Iroquioan section of the Bruce Trail. I will send this blog to the Niagara Bruce Trail Club later on along with a $5 bill to collect my Section Badge. The next 2 km of hiking was tough part and justified the hard rating. It was a steep 150 Meter incline and it seemed every inclined
set of stairs we climbed there was another section up ahead. We were both having a hard time on the stairs and we paused to rest at each set to gather our strength. After 30 - 40 minutes we made it to the top and looked over the escarpment from one of the observation decks. I saw a few houses built along the escarpment and I thought they would have beautiful views. Shortly thereafter we found ourselves back at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area and took the Lea's car back to Quarry Rd Beamsville.
Along the way back to my car we stopped at De Sousa winery to do some wine sampling and Lea bought some wine and was nice enough to buy some chocolates for me (Thanks Lea). Total hike was 21.7 KM and we completed in 4.5 hours.
