Another hot day of hiking. To avoid the heat as much as I could I started out an hour earlier at 7AM. There is a spot near 3450 Guelph Line Rd you can park on the side of the road. I started my hike in the fields and it was slow going because the trail here is overrun with vegetation. Thankfully it only lasted a few hundred meters. After that you wander around a forest for about a km until you exit the forest and turn right onto Number 1 side rd and than turn left onto Walkers Line Rd. There are only a few trail markers so keep walking until you see the next marker.
I have driven down Walkers Line many times over the years and I could see Mount Nemo while driving. I always told myself that someday I would climb that mountain. Well today here was my chance. I kept following Walkers Line until it intersected with the Bruce Trail Entrance to Mt Nemo. A side note here you can enter Mt Nemo Conservatory for free here but if you enter from Halton Parks on the other side of the mountain you pay $6.75.
I
had been hiking for about 5km including 4km of road walking. I stopped just inside the conservatory to take a break but that was a mistake because I was immediately overrun with bugs and mosquitoes. I fled at this point and continue the hike. From the entrance to the top of Mt Nemo is about 20 - 25 minutes of hard uphill climbing. It is rocky and very steep and constant. It is fairly exhausting to get to the top but the view from the top is well worth it. A piece of advise, you should take a break just before you enter conservatory so that you can do the up hill portions in a rush. Once I reach the top I could see far in the distance and see the roads I have driven on for years but now seeing them from the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain is heavily forested but the trail is well maintained and I made good time and I stopped to take another break at the entrance at Halton Parks entrance which is on the other side of Mount Nemo.
The next part of the hike is next to
Colling Rd. You are actually not walking the road but between two fences in a field next to the road. I will say the fences on either side are barbed so it would not be easy to get off the trail and back onto the road. You than turn right on Blind Side Rd and keep walking on the road for another 2km until you get back onto the trail. I had 3km to go at this point and I wandered through a park until I exited 8 Side Rd and turned left. I than turned right onto Panton St which is in Kilbride. There is not much to this town except for a few streets and a school. At the end of Panton St just keep walking through the back of the school and past the Tennis courts and baseball Diamond. You enter the forest again and cross over a creek before ending up on Derry Rd which is the end of my hike.
About half my hike 8KM was on roads and the Mt Nemo climb was challenging. The hike was a total of 17.5 KM and took 3 Hours and 45 minutes. It was exhausting due
to the heat but I was prepared by hiking earlier and having lots of water. Next week I will finish the Iroquioan section of the Bruce Trail and apply for another badge.
P.S
I tried to get an Uber back to my car but none were available and the taxi companies were quoting $40 for a 11KM ride. I opted to just hike back along Derry Rd and Guelph Line. It was a hard hike because the inside soles of my hiking shoes failed so I was walking on the ridge section of my hiking shoes so it hurt for the last 5 KM. Will repair my shoes before my next hike.
